Sat Nav + roof antenna..can it be upgraded?

If I wanted to change the arial, is there any techincal reason why I could not do this(i.e I could of course change it but then neither the Sat Nav nor the radio would work). Do I absolutely have to keep the ugly, black helter-skelter looking arial in order for the GPS system to work properly?

AFAIK, the secondary cable wrapped around the antenna is a GSM antenna - you could replace the std antenna with an after-market one (as long as you don't have a factory-fitted car-kit). You can't however change the antenna base - this is where the GPS antenna sits (on avants).
