boot mounted CD changer problems

My screen is telling me the CD has an Error.
If I open the door on the changer and press the eject button the screen briefly says no cassette loaded before returning to saying Error again.

- Any ideas as to what might be wrong ?
- Is there a fuse for the changer, and if so where is it ?
(I thought the eject button used to light up and it doesn't seem to be at present)

- How does the changer unit come out so I can try to get the cassette out manually ?

- Is the changer covered by the warranty ?

On a slightly different note vagcom tells me my front left speaker is open circuit.
- are the speakers covered under the warranty ?

Cheers,
John.

John,

If I had a warranty my attitude would be that everything is covered until the dealer proves to me that it isn't!

Thanks Dippy. That is my attitude as well, but the car isn't booked in for another couple of weeks and having to listen to the <beep> on the radio is doing my head in :bash:

Think I might get in the boot tonight and have a root around, see what I can discover...

John,

In that case assuming you have an avant (RS4?), you just need to undo the 3 posidrive head screws and then you can pull the whole chassis out. If it feels a bit stuck, try pulling the left side (nearest the rear of the car) first to allow the cables to come free, and then pull the rest out. If the then pull out the CD changer cable (a round multipin plug), wait a few seconds then push it back in, the CD changer will 'reboot' where it will normally go through a sequence of selecting each CD in turn. This may get it out of it's current state.

N.B. You should also be able to do this by removing and replugging the main fuse but I don't know which one it is.

I had my cd changer replaced under warranty for the same. They told me to keep the sliding door closed in the future.

I did remove the changer at the weekend. The box has a 'warranty void if seal broken' sticker
on it so I put it all back after doing several power cycles etc, and still not managing to get the cassette out.

It is powered as I can see the glow of the lazer (I assume), and when I unplug it the head unit says its not fitted.

Time for a call to the dealer...
