My indicators occasionally stick. About one time in ten/twenty you indicate and the indicator just stays on and does not flash - i.e. the little green arrow just stays illuminated and there is no clicking noise. I presume from the outside you just see the orange indicator on, but not flashing.

Like I say it doesn't happen all the time. Anybody got experience of this? Is it specific to the S4 or Audis in general?

Had this at New Year on the way to Cornwall- got progressively worse on the journey and after about 5 hours driving they gave up completely. Phoned Audi in Truro who diagnosed failed relay - if the hazards work then apparently it's the indicator relay only- and they had it fixed in a jif [img]images/graemlins/thumbs.gif[/img]

This was'nt the case at all with my occurrence- although the indicator light was on nothing was visible outside.

No, they are definitely working outside. I just checked.

It's a 72,000 mile S4. I guess it could be that something is just starting to corrode/come loose. The car has a warranty which I guess would cover this. It's just that as the fault is intermittent, Sod's law says that if I took it to a garage, they would drive it and it would be perfectly normal.

No doubt the sands of time will mean that the problem deteriorates to the extent that it would be easier to diagnose then.

This happened on my A6 2.7T on the Sunday morning of GTI International, last year. By the evening it had sorted itself and the problem didn't re-occur in the next 4 weeks before I traded the car for the RS6.

Yep, it's hard to fault Carrs.

i still think it could be the relay,you could change this yourself and its not expensive.its worth a try.

So, how do you change the relay then? Is this in the indicator stick?

No,

its in the fuse box.
Look inyour manual to find out where this is.
There should also be a picture which tells you which relay is which.

Either buy a new one from Audi, or read the number & type off the top of it and go get one cheaper from somewhere like Halfords.

if you have two relays in the fuse box of the same type you could swap them to see if it makes a difference.depending what the other relay is used for.

I have changed the indicator relay/fuse for another 10 amp one I purchased from Halfords. This has lessened the problem - i.e. it still sticks but far less frequently since the change. So I don't think it's cured it completely. It may just be that something else has stopped the sticky indicators occuring so frequently. Anyway, I now know how easy it is to change a fuse, so that info could well come in handy in the future.

if so maybe there is a bad connection between the relay connector and relay,and its now slightly better.
is the old relay in as new condition,especially around the terminals?

I just changed the fuse. Is the relay the little plastic bit you stick the fuse into? This could be the next thing to change. Are they easy to change? Can you buy those from Halfords as well?
