sat nav

Is it worth ordering the factory set up or are there better, cheaper more practical hand held type options that could be transferred over to another car when you need to use that vehicle ?

i went for it on second s3. i wanted the audi look. none of this flip screen shiny aftermarket kenwood or alpine asking to get stolen.

much the same with anything portanle like an ipaq. Its just intrusive on the dash and needs to be stowed away or taken with you to prevent theft.

importing did make it easier on the wallet mind you. But i can just switch off engine and walk away, safe in the knowledge its most unlikely yo get ripped out the dash and pinched.

Factory fit, every time - Nav+, of course. Plus points are the integration and original look, the ability to track (from odometer and gyro inputs) even when it loses sight of the satellites, and I'm sure there are more reasons.

Factory fit looks really good. Of course the older Nav+ is CD only, so if you were a 'real' user of Sat Nav you may prefer a DVD version. Cost is important too. For example on the R32 OEM Sat Nav+ is £2500 - which is basically a rip off, and you will not get the money back come trade in. As PhilT once told me, why spend all that money on something you cannot take with you when you sell the car.

I wouldnt go for it brand new unless I was keeping the car for a long time (especially because I wouldnt really need to use it), but would love to find it in a used car.

Or alternatively - A PDA

I bought a brand new (basic level) one last weekend from Dixons. £450 and this included bluetooth GPS reciever, Full UK street mapping, car kit and the PDA itself.

Used it for the first time yesterday & its just as good as the old Alpine unit I used to own.

You can even use it as a pedestrian / cyclist!

£450! how does that compare to OEM ???

try this:

or look at www.pocketgpsworld.com for more info

if you buy aftermarket system chances are you wont take it out when you sell the car as it will more than likely be dated and will cost to transfer.i think factory or portable makes sense.factory stays with the car and portable can be used or updated as and when at a reasonable cost.
