Phone wiring?

Post by peterb » Sun Jun 29, 2003 9:06 pm

I was looking to instal my hands-free kit in my RS6 today. I anticipated connecting up at the back of the audio head unit as I had done on my A6. However, on pulling the radio unit (Nav+ system with TV) I find that the phone mute and audio input connections are already cabled up in the loom. Now, these cables must go somewhere, but where? If they end up somewhere sensible it might be tidier to connect up at the far end, rather than behind the head unit. Has anyone any suggestions where to look for the connections?

I see, from audiworld, that american cars tend to have phone connections in the left rear locker where the cd changer lives, and at the rear of the centre console, just below the armrest. I have checked both locations and can't find any obvious cables.

My dealer persuaded me to order the car without the factory-fit phone kit - I'm beginning to wish that I hadn't taken his advice!

I specified my RS6 with the factory fit "GSM Phone Prep". The phone cradle was in the centre arm-rest and there was a socket at the front of the oddments bin in the centre console (the one at the side of the handbrake). The socket came out in the front vertical side of the bin...does that make sense ?
You then had to buy a suitable adaptor for your particular phone to sit in the cradle.
I was actually rather dissappointed. I was hoping/expecting that your stored numbers would be accessable from the GPS/TV screen as in a BMW, but not so. All it gives is hands free and auto radio mute.

Cheers

Thanks for that info - maybe I need to look further forward under the centre console for signs of pre-installed cabling.

Two details you may be able to clear up for me:
Does the sound from the phone come through the radio speakers, or is there an additional speaker installed somewhere? (In the past I have understood that the phone-through-radio-speaker feature was not available with BOSE-equiped systems).

Does the phone make use of the standard roof-mounted antenna - there seems to be three separate bundles of cables at the base of the antenna (power, gps & radio??).

The phone uses the radio speakers. There is a menu option on the radio that allows you to specify which speaker you want the phone to come out of i.e. front-left, front-right etc.
Mine didn't have a visible additional aerial, so I assume it used the existing one.
Hope that helps.
