B7 RS4 Strange noises inside the dash... HVAC?

Hello!
Brand new to the forum having just bought a 2007 RS4 three weeks ago, and the dash lights have already started lol. Awesome car, loving the mental V8, but a 14 year old car comes with certain issues it seems.
For starters, I'm hearing a strange series of 'thumps' from the central dash during warm up, approximately 1 per second, repeating 5 - 8 times. Once the car is warm, it doesn't seem to happen, and the colder it gets, the more pronounced the thumps (I'm in Vancouver Canada). It sounds like there is a motor or something trying to operate a flap but can't fully operate.
The HVAC all seems to work correctly, the dampers move correctly when I change the air from up / mid / down, and the noise happens regardless of where the air is directed.
