Switched Live

Hi folks,

I’m having a bit of bother with a switched live for my headunit in my B7. I need to find a non canbus switched live that is switched with sidelights to work the illumination for my headunit. I have tried it in a couple of places, one was the light for lighting up the passenger airbag letters on the dash, the other is in the multi plug that comes out the back of the main headlight switch. Both are a bit temperamental at times causing the headunit to flicker as if the lights are being switched on and off quickly which I’m assuming is because it’s through the canbus system.

Is my only option to feed a 12v supply from my sidelights/taillights? Seems a bit drastic but I can’t think of another way.

Cheers

Fag lighter should have illumination and switched lives.

I’ll have a look, thanks. Do you know if it’s a canbus supplied illumination or if it will be a normal supply?

Cheers

I would say it’s just a normal 12volt cause it running a bulb in there.

Personally I'd install a CANBUS breakout. That way you can pull out from the canbus both an illumination and reverse feed, hookup the illumination feed as intended and the reverse feed to the telephone mute.

Excellent, that’s what I’m looking for.

I’m not sure I follow or when I need a reverse feed for the telephone mute?

Stereo would mute when you put it into reverse, then you can hear your parking sensors

Isn't there a switched live on the ignition barrel?

I’m looking for one that is switched with the sidelights as it’s for illumination of my headunit.

Doesn't it have one in the oem harness? My alpine used to switch but I can't remember if it was based on sidelights or sat nav information.

I tried to find one when I installed it but I couldn’t find one.

Hi folks,

After a bit of playing about today with a volt meter, I worked out that there’s around 18v steady coming from both the light sources I have tried with my headunit and also the ashtray and cigarette lighter.

I’m no further forward with this and I’m assuming the 18v is being supplied by the canbus system and I’m also assuming that this is the reason that it trips out now and then.

I can’t work out wether it’s my car or wether it’s the headunit. Any other ideas where I can find a normal 14v supply that’s switched with sidelights?

Cheers

18 volts?!?!?!? I’d be looking at the voltage stabiliser in the alternator. 14.5ish volts is the norm. Are you sure it’s 18 volts??? If it is it’s probably why the radio is tripping out.

Edit. Put the multimeter across the battery terminals and take a reading. If it’s 18volts there then there’s something wrong.
