i-mob

Post by PhilT » Fri May 09, 2003 10:42 am

Interesting.... http://www.i-mob.co.uk/

About time this hit the UK. European tracking is a great idea. I'll get something like this for my next car I think.

Anyone had any experience of this sort of system?

I know naaathing (spoken in a dodgy spanish accent) on i-mob, but I have had some experience with this gadget, which also doubles up as a performance monitor and can send an SMS if your garage exceeds a certain speed whilst servicing your car.

Good stuff

velly nice! I particularly like the idea of it calling you if someone drives into it. However the wife thinks i'm having an affair with the car anyway and if it starts to phone me at inopportune times it wont help my case at all!

I was very interested in the Trakm8 too but wasn't sure if they would survive as a company. They (Maxon) are also targetting fleet users for vehicle tracking so this must be potential for large customer base.

Fancy posting a review Nige_S4? Did you get standard or advanced?

How much is the i-mob?

It seems that the market is being flooded with a variety of these products at the moment so I am waiting until the stronger shines through before purchasing. It seems like quite an agressive market and the specifications are getting better with each new supplier.

Is the price of TrakM8 a well kept secret then?

Looks a great piece of kit but having just had a whistlestop tour through the website I cannot find out how much they cost.

Steve - give them some feedback mate - tell them that web shoppers need to see the price.

Or is it a case of, if you have to ask you can't afford it

I am interested if it beats my current best price. Trakm8 Advance for me. I have at least one colleague in the office who might also be ready to stump up the cash too. He has been interested in one for a long time. He has been following the market developments for some time and whatever the competition is doing he always comes back to Trakm8. I will talk to him tomorrow .

I am thinking that the i mob costs £825 + VAT and uses synthisised voice commands to talk to you and you to it

The TrakM8 is text message based both 2 and from the car

I believe we are looking in the region of £400-500 RRP but there seems to be a bit of confusion on exact bits and pieces, like is SIM included, whats the cost difference between Advance & Standard
Basically going on a training course Tuesday/Wednesday so I will let you know all after that

Hopefully with a few good offers for us

Obviously the main reason for becoming a dealer is to offer a group buy scenario for us guys

S2_driver et al - I have just got my hands on the TrakM8 that has been floating round our office. Not sure whether it is the std or advanced version at this stage, but will have a play over the weekend. Is there anything in particular you need to know about the device ?

Quick review of the TrakM8 - mine is the std version (without the speed camera location database & remote warning display). It is seemingly infinately programmable to send sms messages back to a mobile phone on; vehicle performance data, journey data, curfew usage, instantaneous location pinging - all without opening up the box (you send it an sms with the settings you want!) So far, I am using the 0-60 timer which only sends an sms if you beat the current setting (fastest recorded so far was 5.52secs), the journey logger whicg sends a summary report everytime my car is used (including by the missus!) - information reported is relatively easy to understand - you get from and to locations based on place names, total traveling time, total distance travelled, highest speed recorded during journey and time spend stood still. I have also got the curfew function enabled which sends an sms if the vehicle moves between 9pm and 7am.

If you want to know more, just ask, but I suspect that most people would be more interested in the speed camera functionality (me included!).

Cheers for the review Nigel.

The feature that I too am most interested in is the speed camera stuff on the Trakm8 advanced. My main worries are that the database might not be as up-to-date as others on the market. We phoned them about a year ago asking about this and they were quite cagey. Maybe they have things sorted now. My guess is that a database's accuracy is proportional to the number of users feeding back new information unless there is now a web-based resource that is used by all GPS-based blackspot warning devices?? I know that the internal database is easily updated with a new *.csv file through the serial port if the data can be sourced elsewhere.

Unless we have a straight answer on the database issue I will buy the standard version and use a Snooper S6R with laser/radar jobbie for the speed camera stuff. I really want trakm8 mainly for the features that you listed above (curfew, telemetry etc) but I guess it can't be the best at everything!!

Lee

PS I know that the trakm8 doesn't do laser and radar but if it had a decent up to date camera database then I would buy one with a Bell 550 detector (top product). Just not sure what is the best way to cover-all-bases yet.

Hey Bushy...

Any more news on the group buy for this ? And further details of the product itself (fitting instructions would be nice so we can assess if it is a DIY job) ?

Cheers

Hi Steve,

How's the back mate? Managed to get close to the car yet or are you still not up to it? One thing I have never experienced (or ever want to). Hope you are back in action soon.

I am interested and possibly 3 others. Will let you know this week.

Any news on the updates and subscription for updating the camera database in the advanced model? Or am I better off getting the standard one and using something like a Snooper S6-R for radar, laser and traffic cameras?

Just been busted for speeding so deffo interested in something to address that too (no-one suggest a lighter right foot!!). They got me on video from a flyover (lastech 20/20) for 7 seconds (from over 400m away) too so can't dispute it. First ticket.....ever. Believe it or not.

Cheers
