As I discover more and more features of my 'new' S4 (2009, MMI 2G high) I've tripped across one that I'm not so keen on . . .
Two seconds after I turn on the heated rear window I get all engulfing interference on the radio (FM and DAB, don't use any other wavelength so I've not tried them). Doesn't affect CD playback.
Car is completely standard . . . . .

Sounds like the well known Audi problem of the filter in the lead to the heated rear window failing.

The heated rear window element is used as one of the aerials for the radio and to prevent interference getting into the radio from the car electrical system there';s an in-line filter - when that fails you get the "all engulfing interference" you describe on the radio.

Can't help on a B8 - don't know the location, and you probably need to say whether you've got a saloon or Avant (the location was different in the B6/B7).

Saloon.
I'd be surprised if it wasn't in the same place as a B7.

Does anyone actually KNOW where the inline filter is (and how to get to it) ? For such a 'well known' problem there's a deafening silence.
I've sent an enquiry to Audi but am not holding my breath - that's almost as bad as trying to communicate with the KGB (or even Apple )

Also having problems with factory fit DAB - signal just keeps on dropping out - virtually unusable.
Could this be connected ?
Where do I start looking ?
Does ANYONE know where the DAB aerial, aerial booster (I think there is supposed to be one) and inline electrical filter are located ?

The filter is in the headlining at the top of rear demisting window glass. As far as I know it's a small circuit board
