Info for those looking at RNSE upgrades

Post by sync24 » Mon Feb 11, 2013 6:53 pm

I had my 'aging' 2006 spec RNSE upgraded today as well as having a new centre console put in [to remove the phone cradle], also installed was an Audi AMI.

Craig from TCLSATNAV did the work. Currently he is supplying 2013 SPEC replacement units along with 2013 DVD updates which include all the latest speed camera info [The disc came with the RNSE]. These are a straight swap and he takes the surround from the old RNSE unit and retro fits it to the new one so the new RNSE looks just right on the dash.
The RNSE upgrade brings the car tech spec bang up to date with a very decent screen, fast satnav and proper media capabilites with an iphone/hard disk [via the AMI] - a really worth while upgrade IMHO.

I also had my Vagcom settings tweaked [unlock all doors on single key press & blip alarm on door lock]

The only problem I found is that I formatted my new HD using my MAC and the equivalent of a FAT32 format - only to find that this wont work on the AMI - You need to use windows to format the drive :dung:

Now to find a DAB solution that I can use with the RNSE without any external controls - so far I have found it is not possible unless you have a MFSW  A car audio Shop I went into today tried to sell me a unit that came with a 'remote control' not too dissimilar from a sky controller handset - He didn't quiet get the fact that I wanted a totally integrated solution. What happened to all the specialist car audio places? Anyway it does look like this is not possible yet - There is definatley a gap in the market seeing as FM is going to be turned off in a couple of years.

There is no date set for FM being turned off, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FM_broadcasting_in_the_UK

Good news - Cheers - Still I want DAB if I can get it - I am slowly upgrading audio on the car where I can and this would be a good addition.

Probably an Alpine/Kenwood/Pioneer DoubleDin - I seriously considered one of these but I like to keep things OEM - There must be someway of integrating DAB fully with the RNSE without a remote contol

You mean use the digital TV signal for DAB - Hmmm - not thought of that - worth investigation.
The other option is to go swap the FBSW for a TT FBSW which has the MF buttons and then installing the AutoDAB option

I will take that as a no then?

It was a genuine question BTW,
as an owner of the newer (2010) RNS-E Nav Plus, this is the only thing I wish to upgrade, seems a bit poor that (to my knowledge) this is the only system still in production that VAG have failed to update to 7 digit postcodes, FFS even the ‘lesser brands’ in the group have had 7 digit postcodes for the last 3 years, come on Audi pull your finger out :audibash:

Is it possible to retrofit the multifunction wheel? I didn't think you could.
