Removing the Concert head unit!

Post by Aud1 » Tue Apr 08, 2003 2:47 pm

Just acquired a '99 A6 Avant (sorry, i'd have loved an S) and wanting to install various multi-media for the kids. I want to fit an FM modulator in line with the aerial lead. I assume the best would be to get to the back of the head unit and fit it there, but how do I get the unit out?

Your help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks

you need to acquire or make some special keys which go in two small rectangular slots on either side of the bottom of the headunit.

I would say they are about 1mm high by 10mm

To remove the unit you need to insert something into the slot that is able to push the clip within towards the middle of the headunit.

The type of key audi supplies looks like this

radio and key

Hope this helps, oh and welcome to the site

Ah ha! I must admit I did a bit of probing with a small flat headed screwdriver but didn't know which way to push! I shall have another go being very careful and pushing toward the center of the unit as you suggest.

If anyone is interested, i'm fitting a DVD player in the boot with three screens, two attached to the headrests and one larger screen on the inside of the tailgate for the little ones in the back. I've sourced everything I need off Ebay - DVD player £90, two screens £175 etc considerably less expensive than a dealer. If anyone needs info on who to contact don't hesitate to send me a message.

The A6 was a great buy and I couldn't turn it down for the price even though I was holding out for an S6 with rear facing seats. So now I have to find a supplier for retro fit rear seats, one company Motor Mods has quoted £750 which seems pricey, anyone know of an alternative?

Thanks again!

Just as a matter of info, the keys to remove the head unit are available from your local dealership at a midge under £16 or from Halfords as an Autolead accessory for £3.50!
