Radio interference

Post by swannny » Mon Dec 17, 2012 9:36 pm

Hey guys

Since I've installed hid kits on my 2002 a4, when I turn my headlights on the radio looses its signal.

Is this just a bad ground somewhere? I thought it would be the antenna amplifier on the rear roof lining, that's the usual culprit on these cars, but I've put another one in and have the exact same problem.

I've got 35w 6k Hids in the a4, and I've ordered 3 sets of 55w 6k Hids for the RS, but I don't want the same problem in that.

Really appreciate any help!

Swanny.

It's interference from the ballast that generates the high voltage needed by the HIDs.

Had this problem on my daily drive (non-Audi) and got some free ferrite clamps from the HID supplier to clip over the leads to the ballasts. That cured the problem on all but the weakest radio stations.

lovely job, thanks Dave,

I was hoping it would be something as simple as that. do you reckon i'll need some for the rs as well? i put 3 sets of hids in my allroad and never had a problem, but that was running aftermarket av equipment.

What RS do you have? All recent/current RSs have HIDs as standard.

I thought the C5 RS6 had Xenons (HIDs) as standard? Could be wrong though...

good point Dave, i only need two kits and a bulb upgrade for the dipped beam. it does have the xenons on dipped beam, so its just the main beam and fog lights to do.

If you ordered the same 55W kit for the main beam that Ringo & I have then you can expect to get interference when using them, BUT, only for the first few seconds when you turn them on and they get up to operating temp/colour temp. Does it with mine but once you have had them on for any period of time, flicking between them on/off doesn't give interference.

That's just what I wanted to hear, thanks footers!

Did you do anything to your oem low beam bulbs, or are they still the same?
