I think the statistics for deaths and injuries in 20mph zones support my view.
Maybe they do.
Death and injury rates are GREATER in 20mph zones than they are in 30mph zones - because drivers are watching their speedos instead of the road.
Although I’m not familiar with the stats this doesn’t surprise me at all. There is probably a similarly corresponding increase as limits come down from 40-30 mph and 50-40 mph.

So the speed of impact is 20mph in 20mph zones, but typically 10-15mph in 30mph zones because drivers are looking outside the car and not just at their speedos so they brake before the impact.
Again I am very surprised at this. Why are people looking at their speedo more in a 20 than in a 30? If it is true though I would have to agree, the detectors are a MUST for some people.

What I think you’re saying is that: speed camera detectors are a useful aid for those people who find it difficult to maintain a constant 20 or 30 mph (plus/minus a small margin) for a reasonable length of time without constantly referring to the instruments. So, I absolutely agree – I guess if the choice is between them spotting hazards or not, camera detectors are an invaluable aid to road safety! Maybe they should be standard equipment.

I guess there must be a danger though that you encourage drivers, already proven to be lacking in judgement (by definition of not being able to judge low speeds), to treat the speed limit as a target (ie they keep going ‘til they hear the beep) when (particularly in 20mph zones) it will often be more appropriate to travel at a fraction of that speed.

I feel the majority of people who have problems with maintaining the lower speed limits often do so because they hold too high a gear (typically travelling in fourth through a 30mph zone) which doesn’t provide the necessary engine braking and allows the car to ‘creep’ above the limit. If they also have a low levels of awareness and concentration this obviously compounds the error. But, it is of course better if they are looking at the hazard than the speedo!

I won’t be buying one but I think you have convinced me that speed cameras may be of more use to some drivers than I had considered. Thanks.

Never heard of Lidatek.
