M4 South Wales. Their 'Safety Camera Unit' is really starting to clamp down on speeders (they keep the revenue generated themselves these days!!).

Re: i-mob
One of the guys here got nicked this morning by a cop on the bridge at J11 M27 (main Fareham exit) and stopped by a car further up.
He was aparently nicked for doing 85, and this was going with the flow in morning rush hour traffic !
No idea why they stopped him specifically. He was only in a standard but fairly new Celica, so not like it really stands out.
Lucky for me though asa I normally travel around 10mph faster along the same bit of road...

I had my headlights on so that probably drew attention to me in the early afternoon on a sunny day. Copped at the slowest point in my journey too!!! I am going to stop hijacking this thread from you Bushy (which we have also hi-jacked from PhilT's original i-mob discussion). Oooops.

Re: Trakm8
I';m interested, but have a couple of further questions before I decide.
1) does it need a SIM, or does it have one built-in
(i.e do we have to do a sim-only deal elsewhere or pay
them/you a subs)
2) can it easily be moved between cars, and if so what is
to stop someone removing it before driving your car off.
3) still not sure on the price yet (even the standard rrp)
4) is it self-installable, or dies it need to be done by a
professional (how's your back ? )
Cheers,

Re: Trakm8
John, I can answer most of your questions ;
1.Yes, it does need a SIM - I don't beleive you get one with it. n.b. you can control the max SMS it will send you in any 24hr period if you are concerend about the cost.
2.Yes it can be moved between cars - just plug it into your cigarette lighter socket. However, if you want to use it as a security device, then you will need to purchase an install kit to hard-wire it in. n.b. it also accepts external inputs wghich can trigger an SMS.
3. No idea of pricing !
4. It depends on how competent you are with car electrics and where you want to hide it. Basically you need a permanent 12v supply, somewhere to hide a DIN (approx) sized-box and routing of the combined GPS/GSM antenna to the inside of a window.
Hope this helps.

Re: Trakm8
Thanks Nige,
I'll await info on prices.
I'm pretty competent with electrics so no problems for me to fit it. I was more concerned with warranty etc.
Cheers,
John.

I've installed a Trakm8 they will provide a free orange SIM card.
The basic kit does not come with the cigarette lighter cable which is useless. It comes with a 4 wire loom. One connection is to earth, one to +12V permanent, one to Ignition switched +12V and the other is for attachment to the car's alarm system.
You only need to attach the earth and +12V permanent supply to get the unit to work - if you do this you set the unit to operate in low power mode 1 with a long power off interval.
Trakm8 comes in two versions Standard and Advance. Advance version has a driver pod with the ability to warn of speed cameras. This version is being discontinued.
The standard version does not have this and can be completely covertly installed.
The Standard version cost me ~£400 and took me 1/2 day to install.
With an RS4 your installation options are limited as the rear boot is probably not practical. Best option is underneath the front dashboard with the combined GSM/GPS antenna facing up underneath towards the windscreen. This location is also good for getting access to earth, +12V and Ignition connections. The unit itself is quite small slightly bigger than a PDA.
I've been using my unit now for over six months with no problems. It has caught the garage out once!
If anyone want any further advice - more than happy to help.
PS The Trakm8 unit is also able to output a standard NMEA GPS location on its serial port which could be input into a Nav system running on a PDA.
