TMC

Post by odysseyireland » Tue Dec 14, 2004 3:28 pm

OK, having just got an RS4 which has a well out of date original Nav CD that doesnt even cover any of Ireland, I thought I would buy an up-to-date one. It is Christmas after all.

This of course brings in the whole 'Does TMC work on RS4 Sat Nav+' question.

My hardware version is RNS 4.1
My software version is 0015

The best 3 CD's on TeleAtlas seem to be:
United Kingdom - Ireland 2004 - 2005 - TravelPilot DX 91.99GBP
United Kingdom - Ireland 2004 - 2005 - TravelPilot DX - TMC 159.99GBP

United Kingdom - Ireland 2004 - 2005 (£91.99) +
Major Roads of Western Europe DX 2004 - 2005 (inc TMC) (£71.99) - TravelPilot DX 111.99GBP

So the best value to me looks like being the bundle giving non-TMC 'UK & Ireland' CD plus a TMC coded 'Major Roads in Europe' CD at £50 off individual prices.

So...
1. Does TMC work in the RS4 Sat Nav+ without modification
2. Is the UK Classic FM coverage working
3. Is it any good and does it cover all of UK & Ireland or primarily focused on South-East UK i.e. what about Belfast!

I have TMC working a treat in my RS4 nav plus but I updated the firmware before getting the disk so I don't know if it will work or not without the firmware upgrade.
M3 CSL - Silver Grey, a few options.

Well, I also looked at the ITIS coverage map and emailed TeleAtlas. TMC doesnt seem to cover Northern Ireland and is poor in some parts of Scotland where we would often go on holiday, so for me TMC enabled UK discs don't seem to be be worth the extra money.

I think I will go for that 2 CD pack of a non-TMC 'UK & Ireland' plus the TMC 'Major Roads of Europe' for £111.99 as essentially I am getting the Europe CD for only £20 extra.

Another mail from TeleAtlas:
__________________________________________________________________________________________

The 2005 version of the UK/Ireland product (TMC & Non-TMC) is being launched at the end of this week, so I would recommend that you wait a few days before placing your order, or call the Service Centre and request this specific version and this will be sent as soon as it is launched.

You can order online at www.navshop.com or by calling our Navigation Service Centre on 020 8230 3188.

I have a Standard Sat nav plus in my Sept 01 Car. Not sure about release levels and TMC works fine. I upgraded to the 2004 DX disc (UK & Ireland) about March this year. I can recall one journey where it didn't find anything to report. Monday morning from Ipswich to Maidenhead - and there was lots it didn't report! Otherwise it's been fine, Devon, Cornwall, Wales, Yorkshire,

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. It only covers motorways, and as you point out it may not cover NI!

H&R coilovers, AWE DTS, Porsche front brakes, Short-shifter, 18" RS4 replicas

I had the same system as yours in my Merc, it covered Belfast, from M1 Stockmans Lane to Whiteabbey, and Falls to Carryduff roundabout on the Saintfield Road, most of Colraine and Derry, anything else was not covered. The Europe disc covers the main roads in the South, M50, N1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7 and nothing else, I am not sure what has been done since the 2005 version was available, mine was 2004. With the new DVD systems more is covered, but not enough to be able to rely on getting anywhere in NI with the system, best keep a map on board..............

Its not that I really need it to find my way about, its just that I don't like having a toy that just says 'You are outside the digitized area'...
