Outside Temperature Reading too High

Post by BlackShadow » Sun Dec 28, 2003 8:41 pm

The outside temperature reading on the dash board is correct when I start my S4 from cold. It then begins to rise as the car is driven until it reads about 5 degrees Centigrade too high.

If I leave the car for short while, then restart it while the engine is still hot, the outside temperature can then read up to about 10 degrees too hot. It was telling me it was 20 degrees last week?

Anybody had any experience of this problem? Could it be that the sensor is picking up engine heat and getting confused? Is the outside temperature reading linked to anything else - e.g. the choke - or is it an isolated circuit so to speak?

Thanks for any help

There was a thread on the RS4 forum about this a couple of weeks ago - here's a link...
BTW, yours is deviating so much it sounds to me like there is something wrong. Perhaps the sensor has come loose and fallen somewhere it shouldn't have.

I don't know for sure, but I would guess the only functions on the car that would use that measurement are the heated mirrors and washer jets. Anything engine related will come from the engines own temperature sensors, of which there are many !

I have had precisely this problem since I got my RS6- not only is it very annoying but it also 'skews' the aircon into thinking it needs to be cooling down the cabin temp when there is sno such requirement- I believe this is a known problem on certain models and the fix is to move the outside sensor-

Moving the sensor helps but does not fix the problem completely. I had to drive with the air con cooling with the outside temperature about 5 degrees.

The outside air temp ender is located in the lower front of the car, in front of the power steering cooler pipe and the aircon condenser...It may well have had a recived a slight knock and it resting on or close to the power steering oil cooler or the aircon condenser....Remove the bumper and check....

Spent about 24 years road racing found tts too difficult although I did use to ride then whenever wife entered one as well, although she too preferred the road. Not competed for some ten years but I do enjoy the occasional randonee - although the ones in Italy are harder than any road race I have ever ridden !
Did the first in 1993 - Paris Roubaix !!!!!!!!! also done the Pyrenees and Dolomites both are probably more preferable than the flat roads to Roubaix .
