In Car PC

Post by Doug_RS2 » Mon Oct 20, 2003 12:34 pm

I've been looking into getting an MP3 jukebox type thing for the car but it's looking too expensive(for what it is).

I am now looking at a Shuttle or Cube style PC in the car. I have an Alpine TV headunit and want to connect to that. Also got an old Athlon 1200 processor and plenty of SDRAM. And I have an inverter if I have to use 220V.

Does anyone have experience/links to putting one of these in a car? I would need a decent remote control mouse for it. And are the OS out there that cater for this?

I think that Bushy was also looking into doing this too. I don't know how far he got with it though.

I also have alpine system in the car, DVD, Playstation etc etc and have had one PC fitted, but since removed

Basically there is a problem with the graphics cards, although much improved now.

I found that the standard ratio of 4:3 for the screen/monitor size just screwed the graphics on the wide screen alpine head unit

Havent done anything with it for a while but found a cube PC that works from 12Y

Will try and dig out info

Cheers

Hi
I'm working on a project as per http://www.tvwiz.net/navigation/computer.html but with the following mods: Via Eden / LEX micro PC, Custom Winamp soft front end, both switched hardware and voice command control.
The LEX http://www.lex.com.tw/mv823a.htm system is the most cost effective in terms of size, PSU (requires 12V only)and ability to boot from Compact flash and DOC.This will link well in to my Nav+ system. Linux or MS...hmmmmm?

If you stick wireless LAN onto it with Wake-On-LAN when you bring it close to the house it will become part of the home network allowing file transfer, also If youinstall VAG-COM on it you will be able to print info from it, etc. Also If you use windows you will have good Remote desktop func allowing you to use the VAG-COM from the comfort of your house. Also the wireless LAN could roam and therefore alllow email to the car etc.

The mind boggles with ideas for this

I met a guy in Thailand earlier this year and he had a pc in his car mainly for mp3, that had wireless LAN, and when he parked up in his driveway it uploaded the latest mp3's he listens to in the house to his car automatically....

Didn't see it working, but he wasn't a total bullsh1tter so no reason not to believe him.... didn't ask what software he was using though ! doh!

Found some info on a Rockford made mp3 jukebox that can Wifi to your pc/server in your house when you park up and upload/download your latest mp3's !

It's badged as Omnifi but it looks pretty cool.

I wonder what the battery drain would be like though ?

If Clarion made one of these that could be controlled by my tv unit I would have ordered this today ! Waiting on a reply as to whether they have one planned or not

Cheers
