Very disappointed...

Post by Dippy » Tue Jun 10, 2003 1:59 pm

...that my DIS did not tell me that one of my bulbs had blown! I had thought that this car had diagnostics that tested the filaments and would alert me.

Anyway, now that it has gone, can anyone tell me how hard it is to replace? It's the 'twilight' or 'side' light in the offside headlamp.

Dave, by chance I replaced both of mine over the weeknd with the non-orange filaments ( see here). The offside one is slightly trickier, as you need to remove the air box snorkel (two phlips screws), then take the back off the HID cluster (this is purely to make room to get your fingers to the back of the bulb). Then you need to turn the indicator plug 1/4 turn clock-wise and it pops out - don't need to disconnect the plug (looks a bitch to get back on). Fitting is the reverse - don't foget to replace the HID cover !

£15 may seem a lot, but if you look at the overall increase in aesthetics and .... SHDOPPPP ! What am I talking about, £15 is ridiculous - no, mine have been sat in the box in the garage for a couple of years. Mine seem to have a blue tint to them when not illuminated - I will post a pic if anyone is interested - looks better and a std bulb had blown anyway, so hey, I guess I can say I've saved money!

p.s.the link was for reference only - you can most likley get cheaper ones !

Thanks for the replies. However last night I thought I'd quickly check that it wasn't the fuse - which it wasn't. But when I put the fuse back in the light is working again! I seem to get these gremlins occasionally (e.g. my SatNav).

I checked the manual and it's only the dipped beam and brake lights which are autochecked.

My A6 was always having problems with the front indicators. The contacts on the plastic bulb holder seem to be suceptible to corrosion. Normally, a "nudge" was all they needed to get them working again, but I did need to replace the holders eventually.
