Swapping over Sat Nav to Sat NavPlus

Post by andy749 » Wed Apr 11, 2007 1:12 pm

Hi There

I am thinking of changing my standard Sat Nav system for the colour Sat Nav Plus in my 2006 A4 CAbriolet and I am just wondering if it is a straight foward change over or a nightmare.I have asked at my local dealer but as you can imagine I hit a brick wall

I can't advise specifically because I did this for my B5 S4 which is an earlier model, but my advice may help.

If your SatNav just uses the DIS and audio, and has a simple controller (near the handbrake), then the changeover is actually quite easy. You just replace your radio head-unit with the SatNav plus unit. For a neat fit it would be a good idea to buy a harness (lots of people provide these). The only complication is the GPS antenna, because your SatNav controller is probably installed in the rear of the car and you need to re-route the cable to the front.

Are you considering doing this yourself?
If so let me know more about your current set-up.

Cheers for the advise Dippy but there is no controller near the hand brake it is operated via the buttons on the head unit I think the model is (BNS 5.0) and it uses the DIS to direct you.Its just I seen some Nav Plus units for sale on this forum and quite fancied one as they look rather good and thought it might be a straight foward replacement

If it is a BNS 5.0 then you have one of the easiest retrofits there is.

The BNS5.0 and the RNS-E use the same connector (a Quadlock) BUT 2 pins are in different positions (Bose and K-line).

All you need is an RNS-E with an 8H0 prefix (since you have a cab), a GPS antenna (which you can mount either behind the instrument cluster or on the bottom face of the dash above the glovebox), a set of 4 radio removal tools, access to a set of fine screwdrivers (to swap the 2 pins I mentioned above) and access to a VAG-COM (to check the coding and clear the errors that always appear when you unplug things).

For all the details go to www.navplus.us - search and you'll find the details about swapping a BNS5.0 to an RNS-E.
