will not start

the other day I drove my avant as normal then when I tried to start it after about 20mins away from car it would not fire only crank over till the low oil pressure icon appeared and I stopped trying. Called the AA and the very nice man reckoned it was the crankshat sensor but i think its the fuel pump. Have any of you had any similar problems and what was the solution???

Clive have you not been paying attention? If it's an Avant it's an ABY (shakes head at Clive).
Could be a couple of things but most likely it is the cam position sender, although if the AA man ran a diagnostic it would show this code on a non running engine even if the sensor was healthy.
You can jump the fuel pump to see if it runs.

HTH's?

In that case, yes, sounds like it's most likely to be the Hall Sender - have you tried pouring cold water down the back of the cambelt?

PITA to change the little bugger

Cheers for that boys I`ll call the garage where I took it tomorrow and pass your info on. When I dropped it off at another garage in town the owner said that these motors are very hard to read any fault codes? was he just filling my head full of nonsense?

No, it's not that the fault codes are hard to read, but rather that the information that can be extracted from these older ECUs is a bit limited.

Do you have access to VAG-COM?

As Clive suggests, Vag-com should see some error if you can get somebody who can use it, try tow/push starting it , it should still start if just the hall sender is 'tired', typically though they degrade over time and don't usually break altogether , without a few wanings and tempremental starting incidents...

I`m offshore at the moment and on night shift so when I can drag my ass out of bed early enough I`ll pass on all this info to the garage. Cheers boys!!
