Brakes?

Post by s2driver » Thu Jan 30, 2003 7:51 pm

It is time for better brakes.

What aftermarket brakes have S2 owners fitted?

Alcon, Bremsport, Movit, Porsche (by someone else like AMD, Quattrosports, Dialynx etc) or something else?

What kind of disk and pad wear rates are people getting with different options? I know this depends on driving style so a comparison to standard would be useful here.

I have just fitted some 18" rims and now need to fill them up with brakes. Well, in truth, I upgraded the wheels so that I could fit some monsters behind.

I know some people in Germany have used RS2 callipers with RS2 brackets and disks from a particular A8 (312ish mm I think) to upgrade S2 braking performance. Anyone here done this?

I am a Mechanical Engineer and, in a bid to break away from the flock, I am considering a custom kit based around RS4 disks and some monster callipers on bespoke brackets. I have done some calculations already and beefy brackets of the right materials will have pretty low stresses. I also have contacts in F1 mechanical design so I can triple check to make sure my component design is conservative. The most expensive parts so far are the RS4 disks at over £550 per pair (Audi UK retail). How does this price compare to other big-brake kits for disk replacement? I want to evaluate the consequences of the various brake options available. Designing and fitting my own would be at least £500 cheaper than buying one off the shelf but I am concious of being stung when buying replacement parts.

Any RS4 owners reading this had any issues with punishing their standard disks (warping etc.). How many pad changes to a disk change or has no-one needed to replace their disks yet?

I do know that quite a few RS4 owners have changed to quattro GMBH disks. Why? Marketing or aesthetics? Did they really perform differently. Drilled disks are so susceptable to cracking but I guess they look fantastic. You don't see many drilled disks in motorsport these days do you? Why?

It wasn't so bad with the standard 16" wheels because the spokes hid them but now it is too embarasing to drive anywhere!!

Bushy. I want a lift so go easy .

Lee. I fitted the AP Racing setup on the front(Doug now has my S2). They cost in the region of £1200, had them fitted by a local tuner. I left the rears, but gotta say they didn't look as bad as yours , are you sure they aren't 20" wheels . I never found an upgrade for the rears, and didn't really need it as it stopped on a six pence, well nearly. Pad wear average, XJ220 pads; and disk wear average. Maybe Doug can add more.......

AP Racing brakes are sh1t hot. I did manage to get them smoking and fade on me though. 12 laps round Knockhill in 15 minutes is hard going for the brakes - But the look on the Driver of the 360 Modena Spider when he couldn't get me off his bumper was priceless.

I have just changed the pads and discs. The pads only cost £65 for Mintex, £70 for Ferrodo. Cheaper than the equivalent for the standard brakes!

I have the worn discs if you want to experiment - make your own bell and caliper brackets - skim the discs - if it all works you can get new discs.

330mm brakes still look too small!

Thanks for the feedback. 330 mm disks do look small behind 18s. Though not as bad as the totally humiliating <280mm stock ones.

One reason for selecting the RS4 disks is that they have an integral Aluminium bell so I wouldn't have to design them myself....and they bolt straight on. 360 mm should look quite cool I think. Making over-strong brackets is a hell of a lot easier than getting the fully-floating bell design right. Bell fabrication could be pretty expensive too because of the tolerances required.
