New 6 pot brakes fitted....
I have had my 6 pots on for a few weeks now. Whilst cleaning the wheels today I thought it was about time I posted an image on the forum. This is the best I can do until I replace my digital camera with something better to post in the gallery.
Note: clean wheels, dirty car, crap camera!!!
System consists of:
AP CP5555 6 pot calipers
360 mm Audi RS4 OEM disks
Custom caliper brackets: Aluminium 6082-T6, hard anodised (designed by myself, manufactured by an aerospace company)
Braided lines
EBC Greenstuff pads
Braking performance is now phenominal! Whilst the standard brakes were wholly inadequate I can now quite easily slow the car with the ABS working flat out from 80 mph. I haven't really given them a thrash yet to determine their fade resistance.
By using the standard RS4 disk it gives me the option to go for GMBH disks or even designing an interchangeable 362 mm AP disk on a fully floating bell if I think I need better performance. I will decide when it is time to change the disks but already it seems that the gasses built up under the very large pad would benefit from an escape route either through drilled or grooved disks. I am not a fan of drilled disks on a non-floating bell as I have seen too many of them crack on other cars due to the thermal stresses.
Clearance is very tight in the 18" OZ wheel and I even had to polish the tops off the balancing masses to make some room! I only took off less than 5% of the counterbalance mass so the wheel balance is still good and they remain smooth even at 150.
When it comes to changing the tyres I will free-issue lower profile masses (stamped with their corrected weight) to the tyre fitters.

Re: New 6 pot brakes fitted....
Nice.
Are you going to GTI Lee?
PS - you don't happen to work for BAE do you?

Re: New 6 pot brakes fitted....
Yes and no
Yes I am going to GTi if I can get out of work.
No, I don't work for BAe. Higher tech than that!
Were you interested in a standard S2 Avant ARB to compare to the standard coupe one? I think that you were interested in the RS2 upgrade. If so, and if I make it, shall I bring it along?

Re: New 6 pot brakes fitted....
I think the front ARB are the same and the rears are totally different. The RS2 one fits the front of the coupe but need an uprated one for the rear to match that - otherwise it will just understeer more - I think.
I'll be at GTI - the S2Central group has a stand (space set aside) with 10 S2s on it - No doubt the car park will be as interesting as the show cars and I think I will notice yours!
Your mechanical engineering credability has just gone up!

Re: New 6 pot brakes fitted....
Yeah, we had this discussions about ARBs a few months ago. I offered someone my standard rear ARB for comparison at the time. Can't remember who that was now.
I did consider making my own uprated adjustable ARBs. I can make you a custom uprated rear ARB if you like! Electron beam welded tubular titanium adjustable one alright for you ? or maybe something more cost effective ? I would need to dig out the steel spec used in production ARBs to guarantee I would achieve higher fatique limits first!!!
When are you arriving at GTi? I have no idea what the traffic will be like other than manic!

Re: New 6 pot brakes fitted....
The rear ARB for the coupe was getting looked into by the S2 Central guys but has gone a bit cold recently. I think some company made adjustable rears but there was some confusion if it really was for the coupe or avant.
I'm driving down for the weekend and should be meeting up with the other S2s first thing Saturday morning (Haha - if I can stay sober enough on Friday night) so we can arrive together. When I get more info I can let you know so we can at least meet up at some point during the day/weekend.
I was at last years GTi and there was no problem getting there but there was probably a 30 minute wait to get tickets/parked.
You could get a good business going out of the mods you are doing - I reckon there should be a few interested in the brakes and ARBs.

Re: New 6 pot brakes fitted....
What about engine enhancements and lightweight carbon fibre bonnets for S2/RS2 (reduced from 20 kg to 6 kg)? There are plenty more funky and original mods on the way! Need to rob a bank for funds first !
I will PM my mobile number before the end of the week if I am going. When is the last time you will read the forum before Saturday?

Re: New 6 pot brakes fitted....
I'm driving down first thing on Friday so last time I check will be Thursday evening.
I need an RS2 exhaust manifold and proper custom chips which I will be discussing with a couple of S2 gurus this weekend (they have designed there own chips) - That should be it upto 380bhp. I think it starts to get a lot more expensive after that.
