Re: Brakes?
Those were 2 great sites! I am now considering getting custom rotor hats/bells made.
Anyone have any caveats about doing this?

Welcome 91 S2. I agree, those links were cool.
If you make your own bells just make sure you use the right grade of aluminium. Most people use 6082-T6 (or HE30) for the bells as opposed to the much stronger 7075-T73. 6082 is stronger at elevated temperatures without going to anything more exotic. You must consider the mechanical properties at the service temperatures that they are likely to experience. Incidentally, quite a few porsche production bells are steel.
Also get the float right on the bells otherwise you could end up with warped disks if you are a heavy braker. AP and Brembo should supply any piece parts and fasteners you need (depending on which supplier you chose to source your disks).
Good luck

ps. Just took delivery of my 6-pot AP calipers today and should finish the CAD design for the brackets tomorrow after I have taken the final measurements. I will keep you all posted with my progress.

Re: Brakes?
Lee,
Thanks very much for the materials info. Is this the same material you are using for your custom brackets?
6 pot AP calipers sounds like a dream. Will you need to install a new brake master cylinder from a lorry? Always wished I could afford AP's or Alcon's.
BTW have you heard of Tar-ox? Italian calipers like Brembo. They make 10 or 12 pot calipers. Don't know if they are any good.

Re: Brakes?
Yep, heard of tarox and their 10 pot calipers but not too familiar with the design with regards to dust seals etc. AP calipers were less than £400 each brand new so not that expensive. They are road calipers so fully dust sealed as well. EBC Green stuff pads were around £60.
Just taken a photo of the caliper for you to look at, see attached.
I will be using 6082 grade aluminium for the brackets but I haven't confirmed the temper yet, need to have a look this afternoon if I can get 5 minutes spare time.

Yes. I took the Pepsi challenge and I personally prefered Coca Cola . Maybe a steel rule would have been more appropriate to give the idea of scale

No, but can a Mechanical Engineer ever be taken seriously trying to measure with a plastic one? I'd get the piss taken out of me in the office if I owned a plastic rule!

Hi,
Just joined up. I've done the upgrade to my car using Porsche 968 CS calipers with Audi A8 314mm discs. You can read it about it here: http://www.s2-audi.co.uk/tech_articles/ ... pgrade.htm

As steel expands in heat, it would give inacurate readings, right?
