Power steering pump blown
Power steering pump blown
For the third time in about 6 weeks my power steering pump has blown a seal and dumped the entire contents of the hydraulic reservoir in and around the engine.
When it happened twice I thought it could be a coincidence but now it's happened again.
The first two times I had the seals replaced and the pump cleaned out.
Has anyone had any experience with this problem?
Does the bomb have anything to do with it?
Is there a pressure release valve which is set too high therefore the seals are giving way before the valve?

Any suggestions are welcome
Cheers
Dave

Re: Power steering pump blown
Sounds like the pump seals are not the proplem. Cause and effect.
If the seals were replaced properly then there must be a reason why your pump is exceeding its rated pressure. As standard the pump should cope with over-pressure excusrions but for only short periods. There must be a pressure relief valve in the system to remove over pressures. I would suspect that the haudralic pump has some form of pressure regulation built-in. Has a pipe perished from the inside filling the system with crap and particulate which could have caused a blockage? Could there also be a problem with the steering rack itself? I am not totally familiar with the s2 hydraulic schematic but there must be quite a few valves that control the pressurised system.
I would be tempted to get a second hand pump from All-Audi, making an assumption that it works ok. This will eliminate your variables and could indicate that the fault is not the pump itself. They have quite a few S2s in at the moment. Failing that, I would take the car to a couple of independant experts for their opinions. I would be tempted to take the car to an Audi dealer and a hydraulic specialist for a second opinion. I guess your car is undriveable at the moment though!?!
Please let us know how you get on!

Re: Power steering pump blown
I've found out that there is a relief valve in the system, in the bomb, I'll attach a picture of the workings.
I've sent off a request for prices of pump and bomb from All Audi.
I'm going to change the bomb first as I don't think there is an internal relief valve in the pump itself, proccess of elimination basically.
Will let you know how it gets on
Cheers

Re: Power steering pump blown
Be carefull as there are a couple of options for these parts, this depends on your chassis number
Re: Power steering pump blown
What sort of different options are there?
Are there different options for each model or literally does it only depend on what year etc it was made.
I'm asking this as there are 2 s2's for breaking on www.allaudi.co.uk but both are '91 3B's

Re: Power steering pump blown
Dave,
I think the differences are primarily between the earlier servotronic equipped S2's and the later ones that came without it (probably the number of outlets on the pump).
I also believe that there is a pressure relief valve in the pump itself. On mine (ABY non-servotronic) there is a round plug on the top of the pump with a cross cast into it. This unscrews and there is a spring and valve assembly underneath it.
I know this because mine started to leak oil quite badly and needed replacing. I think it was only a few quid from Audi (makes a nice change).
Suggest having a look at that as well, but try and get a new one of these plugs first as I had to bash the crap out of mine with a wide blade flat screwdriver to loosen it.
Mark.
p.s. Just had a look through my bills but can't find the one for the plug with Part#. Sorry that would have helped.

Re: Power steering pump blown
Phoned my nearest Audi dealer up and the say that they can't get any internal parts of the pump, just the pump!
Did you get yours from an Audi dealer?

Re: Power steering pump blown
Dave,
Yes I got it from Whetstone Audi in North London about 18 or so months ago, I'm really p**sed off that I,ve lost the invoice. I think it was described as a seal repair kit and I dont think it was specific to the S2, I am going there tomorrow and if the same bloke is there I'll ask him, as he knew what I was talking about staight away. I have had a look on ETKA and I can't find it there-just the pump on its own
Have you tried VAG parts?
I have had a look in the shed and I have found the old one (never throw things away, apart from the odd bill or two ). Ive tried attaching a photo of it, but must be doing something wrong as I keep getting a time out error. I'll PM it to you.

Re: Power steering pump blown
Dave,
I went to Whetstone Audi but the bloke that sold me the plug has moved to Colindale, if you give him a call on 0208 5375730 and ask for Sandy he might be able to help you get the part.

Re: Power steering pump blown
Hi Mark
I was able to get a relief valve from a contact but unfortunatly didn't get a part no.
That went in yesterday and I've booked it into Audi for a hydraulic test.
Hopefully thats the last of it!!!
Cheers
