So I was planning on waiting another year or so for the prices of the C8s to drop to around 80k for a second hand model and then buy my dream RS6 which ive been itching for, for ages now
I then had a separate thought that I wanted to run past you all.
Forget the RS6........
But a second hand Lotus exige 380 or 410 for simply as a toy and then use the change to buy something sensible like a golf r estate as the practical family car
what do you think???
It's a great question & one i'd in the past have sided with the RS6 (or similar) as always loved the idea of 1 car that gives me everything (performance, comfort & giggles etc.) That said, my view of these all-in-one cars has shifted significantly over the past couple of years & that's really been down to how exceptional i've found the Golf R Estate.
Thing is, the RS6 (& it's direct competition) are now all knocking on the door of £100k & that brings it into line with far more accomplished Sports Cars & even lightly used Supercars, which for me would now be an issue. Example being a 991 Turbo S, which in every way possible would out perform the RS6 in everything other than the big boot dept. It can carry 4 people (albeit small people in the back), can accommodate a long weekends worth of luggage if required, are sublime to drive on long journeys & will outperform most things on B roads & even on track if that's your thing.
So, how does this answer your question? Well when you introduce the Golf R Estate as an option, you get a package that's similar in it's offering to the RS6, that being an Estate, AWD, Auto & plenty of toys etc. but for 1/3rd of the price of an RS6 & 50% of less of the running costs. Obviously in a drag race stock vs. stock, the RS6 will pull a lead & make a better noise, but that's really where the advantage ends if you remove any badge snobbery. If traffic light GP's really are your thing, for a couple of grand or so you can address the drag race scenario, but you would still be wanting for some aural pleasure.
Now i'm not stupid enough to say the Golf is better or even as good as the RS6, but what i can tell you is they're closer than you might think & although aimed at very different budget points, let's be honest, they're both trying to hit very similar customer requirements.
Golf R Estate & Exige FTW:)
