Golf R estate....boring as hell. Had one for 2 years...did summink like 7k in it coz every time I walked outside, I grabbed the keys to something / anything else
That's quite a sweeping statement & somewhat unusual on a thread for a car which basically shares it's DNA with the likes of the RS6:)

Whilst i'd agree that a Golf R Estate certainly won't be everyones cup of tea, boring couldn't be further from a term i'd use.

So I was planning on waiting another year or so for the prices of the C8s to drop to around 80k for a second hand model and then buy my dream RS6 which ive been itching for, for ages now

I then had a separate thought that I wanted to run past you all.

Forget the RS6........

But a second hand Lotus exige 380 or 410 for simply as a toy and then use the change to buy something sensible like a golf r estate as the practical family car

what do you think???
It's a great question & one i'd in the past have sided with the RS6 (or similar) as always loved the idea of 1 car that gives me everything (performance, comfort & giggles etc.) That said, my view of these all-in-one cars has shifted significantly over the past couple of years & that's really been down to how exceptional i've found the Golf R Estate.

Thing is, the RS6 (& it's direct competition) are now all knocking on the door of £100k & that brings it into line with far more accomplished Sports Cars & even lightly used Supercars, which for me would now be an issue. Example being a 991 Turbo S, which in every way possible would out perform the RS6 in everything other than the big boot dept. It can carry 4 people (albeit small people in the back), can accommodate a long weekends worth of luggage if required, are sublime to drive on long journeys & will outperform most things on B roads & even on track if that's your thing.

So, how does this answer your question? Well when you introduce the Golf R Estate as an option, you get a package that's similar in it's offering to the RS6, that being an Estate, AWD, Auto & plenty of toys etc. but for 1/3rd of the price of an RS6 & 50% of less of the running costs. Obviously in a drag race stock vs. stock, the RS6 will pull a lead & make a better noise, but that's really where the advantage ends if you remove any badge snobbery. If traffic light GP's really are your thing, for a couple of grand or so you can address the drag race scenario, but you would still be wanting for some aural pleasure.

Now i'm not stupid enough to say the Golf is better or even as good as the RS6, but what i can tell you is they're closer than you might think & although aimed at very different budget points, let's be honest, they're both trying to hit very similar customer requirements.

Golf R Estate & Exige FTW:)

This is exactly where I stand, in a years time I could buy a decent second hand golf r estate for around 20k and a decent second hand exige 380/410 for 50-60k....That would still prob be cheaper than a second hand c8 rs6. The exige would offer super car performance in all respects and would not suffer from the depreciation that an RS6 would....

I mean look at this thing!

You will need something a lot more expensive to be quicker than that lotus.

Try and stretch for the 410 though as it is charge cooled too

Partly because I am bored at the moment and partly because I and not sure whether I want the C8, I am weighing up a late 991T Manual alongside a new 340i Touring. I have really enjoyed my C7 but miss the nimbleness of the RS4 and fear the C8 is just too big for the lanes of Devon. I also miss not having a 911 in the garage, but now I am pretty much retired don't have the luxury of having a company car for everyday stuff. Thoughts?

My thoughts would be, if the 991T is that good, as I'm sure it is, then when would you take the 340i out, other than when you were taking the garden rubbish to the landfill, and were in a hurry.... :boots: similar dilemma though I need the space so the 991T isn't an option sadly....

Whilst my 911 is effectively my daily I don’t use it everyday because There are places I don’t want to take it or leave it and of course it is more of occasion each time you drive it!

I drove mine to work this morning whilst the roads are still quiet and then brought the Mrs back in this afternoon

I do find that when I drive it I drive it for what it was designed for and other times in other cars (wel not the lotus!) I’m happy to just cruise in

The 340 would fill that gap nicely.

Sorry, I maybe didn't make myself clear. Since semi retirement and the loss of a company car I have stopped having a toy in the garage and gone for a one fits all, hence the RS6. I am due to change in a few months time and weighing up what to do, I cycle, golf and have two kids at Uni so need something with reasonable amount of space. I would consider an M5 if they built a Touring version, Alpina's are great cars but high risk from a discount/depreciation POV and while I've enjoyed my RS6 I'm not sure I want another very big, heavy car to run around the narrow lanes of Devon. I reckon I can pick up the right spec 911T for around £65k and get a deal on a new 340i, which would bring me out somewhere near a good spec RS6. Of course there are running costs etc but I am beginning to think its a better option. The added plus would be that Mrs Foxy would probably drive the 340, she won't go near the RS because of the size of it.

You can get two sets of golf clubs in a 911 and a bike on the roof.....

I’d wager in a couple of months time there will be a good chunk of panic selling. I’d keep the powder dry.

I know, I've had 7 of the bloody things previously!! However, you can't get all the associated crap teenage daughters have to cart around at Uni and nor can you get Mrs Foxy's golf trolley in one. You're right about prices I think, but stock may be a problem as I know that dealers are not buying much in right now so the market, especially for something like a 991T, will be tricky to judge. I see an awful lot of nearly new 992s for sale and think you could steal one right now, it's just that they're all PDK as was my last 991, which lacked the fun of a manual for me.

this is turning into a interested debate.....

Toy + sensible car vs one car does it all.....obviously pros and cons to both sides of the argument

I think a lot of it may be down to everyones own financial situation and also personal situation as far as kids etc goes. If i did not have kids I would not be considering a RS6 even though I love these cars

I currently live in West Hampstead with my m5 parked on the street and have done so for the last 7 years. Ive never (touch wood) had any parking issues with neighbours hitting my car, thefts, vandalism etc etc but whatever I get next needs to tie in to the house we plan to buy in the next year which will be in the suburbs.....As part of this house move a garage is a must have as there is no way I would want a bright orange Exige or new RS6 parked in the street as I feel I need more security with these types of car

The C8 is no bigger than a C7....just looks it.

There’s mm in it.

Still a big car of course, but rides and is so much more nimble than a C7.

I'm sure you're right Chris and I'm equally sure it handles better, but it is a big car and I am just beginning to feel that the size is beyond my needs now. I won'y be making any decisions for some months yet, too many unknowns at the moment.
