Ghost, Tracker+ immobiliser, or regular tracker

Post by mgoliveruk » Fri Jul 10, 2020 10:47 am

What is the view in here among the different additional security measures that can be added to an RS6?

There is Ghost immobiliser, Trackers with Remote Police Authorised Immobilisation like Vodafone S5+, and trackers where immobilisation is activated by the owner through app / website. I heard people using combination of immobilisers with trackers and even having multiple trackers fitted...

I'd be very interested to hear this too - Ghost is £249 with a £69 12mth pre paid sim - seems to be very popular.

Had the dealer fit a Vodafone Protect & Connect 5 on mine before I picked it up (it was the only one they did). Insurance company stated it needed a tracker and having one fitted dropped the insurance premium substantially.

I've always been of the mindset that if its stolen I don't want it back, but went for the tracker purely for the insurance benefit. Think the tracker was about £400-£500 fitted and included first year membership. Have an app on my phone so can tell where it is etc etc, and has a small fob that has to be in the car for the car to start.

Also had a Vodafone tracker on my C7 for the same insurance reasons. I have another car that is the same insurance group but the premiums are much lower than the RS6, but I think the RS6 has been high on insurance companies lists of potential for being stolen.

Reality is, if someone wants to steal it, they are likely to regardless of what is fitted. For me its more about doing what you can, reducing the likelihood and maybe they move on to another car that isn't so secured. Suppose with Trackers though no one knows its fitted, so it defeats the object of obvious security. Not like the 90's where every hot hatch or Cosworth had so many Stickers for so many alarms in the window so people would walk round the corner and steal one that didn't 'look' alarmed!

It all depends on the purpose of the tracker.
If you are installing one because your insurance company says you need one then any insurance approved one will do. I'd then spend more money making it harder to steal; home security etc to prevent them breaking into your house.
If you actually want to stop it being stolen once they get inside then Ghost, blackjax etc can help although I heard they could get around this (although Ghost may have updated the product since). Problem with this is they may come back inside your house and threaten you for the unlock code. I prefer the blackjax as it lets them drive for a few minutes away from your house then sounds the alarms, flashes the lights etc and immobilises the car. Not much chance of them coming back to your house at that point.
If you want it back after it is stolen then getting one that can immobilise the car will help. I think Tracker were the only company that used VHF as well as GPS/GSM to help locate the car if parked in an underground car park etc. May be others doing that now. Problem with most imobilisers is that they get installed in one of 3 locations so the thieves know where to look once they steal the car and rip them out. Or park the car for 24 hours and wait to see if it is recovered. My thoughts on this are to get a cheap or defective tracker and install it in one of the obvious places (the C7 came with tracker Prep to make it even easier for lazy installers to fit it and make it easy for thieves to find it, not sure of the C8 has this too) then install a proper tracker in a well hidden location. This was they will look in the usual place, find the dummy tracker, rip it out and think they have disabled the tracker but no, tricked ya, still got the real one live.

I wouldn't want my car back if it gets nicked - however the funder and the insurance company are mandating a tracker is fitted, though they have specified any tracker will do - I want a cheap one!!

Me too. Got any old approved one, but had it fitted properly. Then spent more effort in making my house less attractive to thieves.
