Mission Motorsport - Launch Control

Post by Gio G » Wed Jun 26, 2019 11:23 am

Thought I would just share my experience of taking my RS5 to Mission Motorsports inaugural launch control event over in Abingdon, Oxford.

Mission Motorsports is a charity, which helps ex-serviceman to retrain and get into Motorsport, a fantastic cause..

I booked myself on the afternoon slot of the Saturday just gone and the weather was perfect.. It was very well organised and many volunteers dedicated their day to making this an awesome event.

The format was essentially going down an airfield at high speeds! Side by side drags, where the timing equipment recorded 0-60, Quarter mile times and finally a half mile terminal speed, before you hit the brakes!!

I warmed up first with a few runs, getting to know the airfield and understanding the breaking zones..

Pretty thrilling launching the car down the airfield, however it was not until my third run that I used the correct launch control sequence in the car and then the times started dropping quite significantly..

Best times of the day, 0-60 was 3.6 seconds, I reckon with more practice, could get it down further. Best Quarter Mile - 10.9 seconds and terminal speed at half mile marker was 137 MPH.

I was pretty happy with those times considering the car is totally stock, running factory conti sport contact 6 tyres, so nothing super sticky.. As a comparison a lovely McLaren 720S ran his best times 3.2 seconds to 60 and 9.8 second quarter mile.. they are over £100k more expensive than an RS5!! of course reaction times play into the numbers significantly...

Best overall time was a Lichfield Nissan GTR, doing 9 seconds quarter mile and half mile speed 188 MPH!!

It was a superb day and I look forward to the next one!

Left foot on the brake, right foot on the throttle, build boost, release brake.
