Bouncing/choppy ride

Post by Tim634883 » Wed Aug 10, 2022 12:59 am

Hi All,

I’m new to this group having recently purchased a 2018 RS4 in the UK.

I’m finding the ride pretty choppy and it bounces a lot even on ‘smooth’ UK motorways in comfort/auto. Switching it to Dynamic suspension makes it firmer so less bounce but then also unbearable on a long motorway drive.

I sold my 991.1 to fund this RS4 so I’m used to firm and low ride height sports cars but I never had this sense of chop like being on a poor ferry crossing.

I’ve checked the tyre pressures. Fronts are 41 and rears are 32. The recommended pressures look to be 38/32. Will 3psi really make a dent to smooth out this chop?

Or is there something else I could try?

Any help/thoughts/explanations are welcome.

Thanks, Tim

Welcome, so the 1st question would have to be what kind of suspension have you got? The RS4 was available with an option - DRC - Dynamic Ride Control. If you don't know then the MyAudi App will enable you to check the specification of the car.

I would have thought 41 PSI is kind of high on the fronts - you'll end up wearing the middle of the tyres out.

Thanks for the response.

I’ll double check on the My Audi app, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have the DRC. I assume this option would have reduced that chop.

If 41psi is high as you say what would you recommend as the optimal balance between fronts and rears?

Thanks, Tim

Audi place a Sticker on the end of the passenger front door I recall - with the recommended pressures. For my current RSQ3 I run the same pressures all round @ 36 PSI.

The choppy ride might be shot shock absorbers, my RS4 has almost every option (ex Press car) including DRC. The feature robbed the RS4 of the fun factor for me - it was too near perfect and not in any way scary which to my mind an Audi RS ought to be.

If your running 20" 275s it's 38 psi front 32psi rear
41 psi front and rear for a fully laden car
I run mine on the 38 / 32 with no issues my car is on DRC

But unless you can do back to backs with a similar
set up it might just be the suspension is firm
I run mine in dynamic and most people think this is a hard crashy ride but I seem to be used to the set up not any harder or crasher than my last RS4 with DRC

Thanks all. I’ll lower the psi to 38 front and double check the 32 rear and see what that does.

Otherwise I might look into the shock absorbers to see what state they are in.

It feels like the F1 Merc this season 😅
