RJW’s RS4
RJW’s RS4
Firstly, apologies for the epic. I’ve been after a fast estate ( or touring, or avant, or wagon ) for the last two years now. I had the following on my short list:
• A6 C7 BiTDI
• S6 C7
• RS4 B9
• M340i
• Octavia vRS
• Golf R Estate
Didn’t fancy front wheel drive or Haldex, which removed the VW / Skoda. Having had BMWs for the last 30 years, I fancied a change. This left an Audi.
So, last Oct I bought an A6 C7 BiTDI. Lovely car but didn’t float my boat eventually, for a number of reasons. Before anyone asks, yes, I did test drive it and at the time it seemed to tick all of my boxes.
So my search was restarted, S6 or RS4. When I rang for most of the adverts that appeared, the cars had already been sold. Well, the good ones. I rang about an RS4 a couple of months ago that I spotted on the Audi website but was told it had already been reserved. About a month ago, the dealer rang back saying the buyer was having trouble getting approved for finance and would I still be interested if it did fall through. O yes…
Two weeks ago I went to see it, test drove it and was smitten. The BiTDI was sold privately, as Audi were giving me a poor px deal. They didn’t even look at the factory options it came with. Last weekend I picked up the car, happy bunny.
So what did I get? The details from the advert included:
A 2018 (18) RS4, with the following:
• Navarra blue, black interior
• Black Styling Pack
• Comfort and Sound Pack
• Driver Assistance Pack – Tour
• Head-up display
• Panoramic glass sunroof
• Parking Assistance Pack Advanced
• Red brake calipers
• Storage Pack
My checks also showed it has the Sports exhaust, which was never listed on the advert.
My experience with the dealer was mixed and this was not the first time I’ve come across this with franchised dealers. They just don’t seem to be passionate or have detailed knowledge about the products they sell. Examples with this particular purchase include:
• When asked if it had DRC, they stated it came as standard. < sigh >
• They were keen to tell me that the car had three new tyres on it. < face palm >
• They told me I can’t connect the car using myAudi, which I think is wrong. I’ve since spoken to the myAudi team and as long as I have this key tag code, I can set it up. I will need to
order one from my local Audi dealer once I get my V5. They gave me some of data tag to plug into the OBD port, which I’ve removed. I had something similar with a VW I had.
But I do like the fact that it has the Audi warranty, in case anything goes pop in the next year.
My interesting previous cars start with a couple of Mk2 Escort RS2000’s back in the early 80’s through to a E82 135i ( heavily modded ) and a M3 F80 ( lightly modded ).
I do have some questions and will probably have some more once I get to play with it:
• Is it possible to show the gear the car is in, in the normal HUD display (as opposed to the sports HUD display)?
• I got two keys with the car, should it be three? With my A6, I got a third plastic key.
• Manuals, did you get paper manuals and if so, which ones were included?
Apologies for the lack of photos, I’ll sort some out some more once I get some time to prep it first but below is a token gesture when I went to the dealer.
O, I'll need to change my signature as well.

Re: RJW’s RS4
Great spec, looks amazing in the Navarra!
Agree on the franchise dealers. I've been told adaptive cruise is standard, and on a car that from the front photos had no radars. I've even had a video tour touting the carbon fibre interior on an example that had alu inlays.
At least in my own hunt I've become adept at identifying options from photos and keeping my own spreadsheet.

It's amazing they get away with it.

* Yes HUD can show gear (I seem to recall a push button next to the switch but something I did once and never repeated so forgot exact procedure)
* I got two full function keys (no spare)
* Yes I got a paper manual but for A5 not RS5.
Better replies will be along shortly.

HUD Modes:
1. Normal - Current speed, speed limit, nav info etc.
2. Sports - Current speed, lap time, engine temp, current gear etc.
3. Off
Is it possible to code it to show the gear in HUD mode 1?
For my paper manual question, did you also get a 10 pager called a Service Schedule (with I think the VIN number label stuck to the first page?

Re: RJW’s RS4
Mine a MY18 B9.
Can't help on the HUD I'm afraid.
Paper manual wise, I only have the main user manual but that has the VIN and options codes Sticker inside the first page. No 10 pager service schedule.
2 keys only on mine and that tallies with the number of activated keys in the 'Car Information' section on the Car Servicing & Checks menu on the MMI.

Re: RJW’s RS4
Hey RJW, what do you think of those luggage rails? Is it just that lateral sliding separator functionality that they provide?

Re: RJW’s RS4
Having that strap thing in place now is useful, can't have one of them without the rails.
But you also have the ability to still have the net, if necessary.
Would I do it again? Not too sure, considering the final cost.
I had assumed I could use all of the bits that clip into the rails from my A6, which isn't the case. So, had to invest in one of these:
