2018 TTRS to B9 RS4 - ride

Hi everyone,

I have started looking at B9's and hope to get one sorted over the coming month or two. I am considering cars with/without DRC. The 2018 TTRS I have at the moment does not have mag ride and is firm and jiggly on a lot of surfaces and I want to move away from this hence being interested in a car with DRC. The RS4 is obviously a very different car and therefore things like standard sports suspension may be different (more comfy) then the characteristics of the TT.

I will obviously try and sort a drive in a few, but I just wondered if anyone on here has switched from a TT without magride like mine to a B9 without DRC......it may help my decision on DRC.

I had standard suspension and imho it was great. For reference I had mag ride on my RS3 before the 4.

I’ve not tried the TTRS before but I’m currently driving the B9 RS4 without DRC and the ride is very firm and hard on rough surfaces. Very comfortable for the first couple of millimeters of suspension travel, but on bigger deflections my insides hurt and you can feel a bit of loss of control of the car. It bothered me so much that I’ve recently upgraded to Ohlins and now have the control back on the rough big stuff, but lost a bit of plushness on the small stuff. Still playing around with the spring rates though, as Ohlins don’t come with springs, you choose your own rates.

I've test drove both B9 and B9.5. I'd say B9.5 is much more comfotable when you put it in Comfort mode. It rides pretty much the same as A4 but when you switch is to Dynamic, pretty stiff like B9s, so loved it. I think both cars were with DRCs.

Hi Mac, I have a 2018 B9 RS4 with DRC on 20” wheels and it’s absolutely fine. Commuting I use comfort mode, pressing on an A road I use Auto and Dynamic on smooth twisty stuff and roundabouts.
The only issue with a DRC car is that you cannot fit a towbar, other than that I love it. It rides as well as my B8 S4 did with its 18” wheels and dynamic suspension.

I had a B8 S5 Sportback (pretty much an S4) for ten years prior to my B9 RS4 and I can tell you with 100% certainty that the B9 RS4 without DRC is much much harder than the B8 S5. So I think the DRC on the B9 RS4 must be a much more comfortable ride than without DRC.

At the end of the day, I think you will be happy with whichever one you get. DRC is more tuneable from the MMI as far as I understand.

I certainly don't hate the ride in mine, but I definitely want a better ride moving forward, especially for wife and the dogs on the sorts of trips we like to do.

I had a B8 S5 Sportback (pretty much an S4) for ten years prior to my B9 RS4 and I can tell you with 100% certainty that the B9 RS4 without DRC is much much harder than the B8 S5. So I think the DRC on the B9 RS4 must be a much more comfortable ride than without DRC.

Pretty pointless statement and comparison.
B9 RS4 with DRC is the one to have if concerned with a comfortable ride.
In comfort it is a plush a ride as my Range Rover on the road.
Then you have the options and with them you will find something you’ll enjoy.
When I tried the non DRC car when I was buying I dismissed it straight away. Way too uncomfortable for day to day use.
Do you really want to compromise and start changing suspension components to get something that will never be as good as factory DRC?
Get the DRC car. End of.

My statement and comparison was not pointless, it was in response to paulread69 who said his B9 RS4 with DRC was as comfortable as his B8 S4, but my B8 S5 SB (essentially the same as his S4) is much more comfortable than my B9 RS4 without DRC. The point being that non-DRC is very uncomfortable compared to with DRC, so if he wants an RS4 to ride well, it has to have DRC.
