Bedding in Brake Pads

Post by Munchingmolar » Thu Apr 22, 2021 2:02 pm

Having new Zimermann discs and EBC Yellowstuff pads put in next week. The discs have a coating, and when I looked at the pads, they have a red coating stamped “brake-in coating” (should say break-in coating !!) The instructions for these pads specifically say drive carefully for the first 50 miles, then after 200 miles of urban use, using the brakes severely ONLY IN AN EMERGENCY, commence the final bed-in by braking from 60 to 20mph at least 5 times. I have gone straight to the fast braking method in the past without any problems, and wondered if the pad and disc coatings should make me think again ! Any advice ?

Just drive normally - that's what I've done with the Redstuffs on all my RS cars. The coating is abrasive and 'trues-up' the disc surface relative to the pad.

Red stuff beds in better gradually using the abrasive coating. I’ve been using Red Stuff on all my cars for years now. On one occasional I did the quick bed in method and went though the coating too quickly, and it didn’t bed in as well. Lesson learnt.
