Moving the car without engine running

Post by GH18 » Sun Aug 02, 2020 12:19 pm

Hi everyone :bigwave: , first post on here & would like a little guidance if possible please?
Typically I would like to move the car on the drive at home without having to start the engine each time (e.g. when washing) but I can't figure out how to get it out of park & release the electronic handbrake. Can someone point me in the right direction please as the search function didn't reveal any answers for me?
I'm hoping it'll be something simple that I am overlooking.

Thank you,
Gary

I don't think you are going to be able to do what you want.
There is a release mechanism to get the gear box out of park by removing the cup holder in front of gear lever and inserting a tool from the boot toolkit but that is just for emergency recovery by breakdown services.

It may be different for VW gearboxes but this is what I do.

Don't apply the handbrake / Auto Hill Hold when turning off the engine - then when you want to move it;
Turn the ignition on.
Press the Brake pedal and move the selector into Neutral.
Push the car to where you want it, then move back into Park.

Maybe the different gearbox design prevents you from doing this?

Thanks for the replies RS5 & Nige, it's much appreciated.
To be honest RS5 I had seen the reference to the emergency release option but wanted to avoid that if at all possible.
Any other suggestions would be most welcome as I can get the electronic handbrake to release but the gear selector just doesn't want to move even with the ignition on, it's as if the gearbox is waiting for a message on the canbus system telling it that the engine is running before it allows you to select either reverse (going through neutral first) or drive.

Regards,
Gary

Am I missing something? Why not nudge forward or backward using the engine .. seems very convoluted to work around!

Apologies if I’ve missed something obvious
