Exhaust question

Post by SuffolkBob » Wed Jun 10, 2020 10:19 pm

Hi all,

Long time lurker. On my 3rd RS4 (B7,B8 and currently ‘18 B9)

I’m hopefully having a Remus exhaust fitted next week- my only disappointment with this car being the sound

I’ll be taking home the sports exhaust currently on it

Do you guys think I’m better off trying to sell the sport exhaust or keeping it and selling the Remus when I move on from this car (looking to keep it another 2-3y). Storage isn’t a problem

Any opinions? And hope not a daft question!

Cheers. Bob

Hi Bob not a daft question no! I'm currently going through the same journey with my B9 RS5 and as you say-they are too quiet! I'm going for a non-res race Milltek catback system and have the sports exhaust as well. I would say if you can store the old exhaust then make a decision nearer the time. The one thing everyone agrees on is the lack of noise so when it comes to sell it you should be able to recoup at least (depending on mileage and condition) around half the retail value of the Remus (even better if you can get a good deal on one now). They will be an in-demand item and hopefully there will be more of the cars sold by then so a bigger market.

Not a problem Bob I originally was going back to a C7 RS6 or 7 but they are feeling a bit dated now and the 5 really impressed me. Having said that I’ve not even managed 800 miles in 3 months of ownership. The lack of ‘drama’ is annoying to be frank, previous was an M3 Competition and that was an excellent steer and plenty of adrenaline shots. The B9 is probably too smooth for its own good! The exhaust will massively help with that and when it’s on will post some comparison videos. Be interested to hear the Remus comparison as well.
Strangely enough my insurer (AXA) tells me that (despite exhausts being on their modifications list) that they won’t insure me with it on so I now have to find a new insurer.

This sound issue is massive now with Audi mainly down to the GPF thing. To me you buy an RS for the look performance and above all the sound. I’m not a fan of BMW but when you hear their top end cars they do sound good.
I think I’m probably on my last ever Audi RS

We have a 340i M touring (delivered Nov 2019) next to my rs4 in the family garage and I must admit the sounds there is better. But to be frank I’m happy about the RS sound given that 90% of the time I use it to go to work, in the city centre, and if I really want to hear an engine noise I jump on my motorcycle (it a still an “Euro 3”).

But probably they should have been more aggressive with the sport exhaust/open valve mode so to give the driver the option to be polite when needed and satisfyingly noisy on demand.

I thought I’d be disappointed with the noise after having the V8 but I’m surprisingly not.
It’s quieter in the car certainly but if you’re outside I think it’s loud enough. It turns heads when in RS mode for sure.

Just had my 2 from resonators deleted and it’s 25% better and sounds like it should have done (2018 B9)

That sounds fantastic, how is it in comfort with the valves closed?

Was a big job to do?

As said before after the B8 the B9 just needs a bit more noise to make it perfect.

Comfort mode is quiet like normal but idle is better.
$400 AUD (230 wish quid)
30 mins!!
and reversible of course
I just could not justify $5k AUD on a miltec etc , saving for new wheels maybe....
It sounded great on my weekend drive.

After over 3 months and two suppliers my Milltek non res exhaust is about to be delivered. Once it’s on next week (earliest it can be fitted) I’ll put up a dedicated post with some comparisons to help with your choices.

This sounds incredible.
I totally agree love my B9 RS4 but wish the sports exhaust was louder and agree don’t fancy spending ££ on a new exhaust system,
2 resonators deleted? Sorry if I sound thick, what does this mean ? And is this something someone can fit for you etc, not very handy myself. I’m based in tbe Uk

I have posted the images on my RS4 Instagram account https://www.instagram.com/p/CEDb8t8JC41 ... _copy_link

You will see the two front resonators , various other exhaust shots and then a gap where they were cut out and finally the two straight pipes that replaced them.

Any good reliable muffler Shop can do this , search round on forums etc or Audi Owners on Facebook .

I now have the resonators in the garage should I want them welded back on but in reality anyone I sell my car too will want this louder sound.

Cheers

I’m about to be a new owner of a 2020 RS4, and I’m sure it’s going to be even quieter than the 2019 because of the GPF and the new noise regs. My build has the RS Sports Exhaust that’s switchable, as most of you guys would also have I believe. What I still have not been able to find out is what is the diffrence between the switchable Sports Exhaust and the regular Exhaust, because looking into the mufflers of the regular non-switchable exhaust reveals that there are valves just like the switchable. So this baffles me, and I’m wondering what is the actual difference in hardware (disregarding the switch) ? When you go to build your car, the info provided is very limited.

So finally got my Milltek fitted to my
B9 yesterday and it makes the world of difference....like having a new car and it’s transformed the sound (important in a performance car imo). One thing I’ve found is how massive the rear section of the OEM exhaust is! Doesn’t break apart like the Milltek (which comes in sections) so am having to hire a van to get the exhaust back home for storage.
In the coming days will post comparison vids and the difference is night and day.
