RS Sports Exhaust Paint Flaking

Hi All. I have noticed that the internal Matt paint on my B9 sports exhaust has started to flake. The exhaust is only a year old and I spray it with ACF-50 each time I wash it to prevent rust and the valves seizing up.
I haven’t attacked it with any harsh chemicals or steel wool/wire brushing.

Has anyone else noticed this and had any experience with their dealer about it?

Hi Paul

Its a pain in the ass & has been for me on a lot of cars.
It seems the black exhaust tips are all the same across manufacturers, I had a Macan GTS last year & had the tail tips replaced twice under warranty, also had my RS4 B8 ones replaced 2 years ago.
Like you I use GT85 after every wash & im quite fussy on making sure they are wiped clean.
I have always put it down to the strong emissions on start up ? ,, not sure & I have never had an answer from any of the Manufacturers !!!! its a strange one.

Loads of Wax & ceramic coating I say :D

One thing for sure it will be a lot easier to replace the tips on the B9 - You had to remove the Bumper on the B8 !!

Ok, glad I’m not the only one this happens to. Also good to hear the tips are replaceable. The whole back boxes were only changed last year because of the seized valves.

You may have a point about the emissions because it’s only the left side which is used more than the right side!

Have you ever tried painting (spraying) it with exhaust paint? Results?

Oh well, the service is due now, so I will mention this once the virus lockdown is over & see what Audi says. It’s still under warranty.

Cheers
Paul

I have got a spare badly pitted set for the B8 , I was going to try painting then selling them.
To be honest if your car is still in Warranty I wouldn't paint them - see if you can get some under warranty. Did you purchase the car New ? if so go back to salesman first to put a bit more effort in with Warranty claim

I have noticed that the external outer tips are welded on , making it difficult to replace them . Typical!

Feck your right there welded on
Feckers will have to look at another solution
As i could get them replaced under warranty but they would eventually go the same way
Back to the drawing board me thinks

The exhaust tail pipes are a 'black chrome' which is actually one of the high tech paint finishes available today. Audi are fond of Stainless steel for tail pipe trims so they might polish up nicely....but there again it wouldn't look like the Sports Exhaust option that is all black when done...

Just Googling this - it's probably a powder coat: https://www.prismaticpowders.com/shop/p ... -chrome-ii over the top of a chrome finish...seems probable as the paint is chipping off to reveal 'silver' below.

Does beg the question if Audi fit the same exhaust system - where perhaps one has silver chrome and the other black tail pipe trims and the difference is just software?

Yes after washing mine the other day it started to bug me just around the bottom or pipes think it is common on most painted black tips had it on my B8 Rs4 so used a bit of Black Caliber paint I had from years ago I had kept for some reason, and was just the job 👌

Are we all talking about the same thing? It’s the matt paint on the inside that’s flaking, the black chrome outer tips are fine (so far).
Here is another pic

Have you previously seen the outer paint flake as well?
