Winter tyre size

Post by Brooner » Wed Aug 21, 2019 4:46 pm

Gents

I have recently got a set of the original RS4 19" alloy which i will be using for winter tyres
The standard size on these from audi are 265 35 19
Bug i would like to go down to 255 35 19
As there is more selection of winter tyre and thinner tyre is better in the snow
My worry is is this too small for the rim and would i loose the rim protection

Or just stick with the standard size
I welcome your advice

I bought my RS5 with 19". The tyre pressure Sticker on the door says the winters (M&S) are 235/40 R19
Current : 2018 F5 RS5 (Let's Fire Up the Quattro)
Gone : 2017 M3 CP
Gone : 2007 B7 RS4 ( :kissmyrings: )

That is probably on a different alloy
The ones i have are 9 x 19 et 24
Audi probably has the same alloy size as it was on the B8 8 x 19 et 26 which has 235 40 19 tyres

Stick with standard size. They work well, unless you live in the Alps.

..... just to share 'opinion' - which suggests certain ignorance - not to suggest proper advice :

w/ B8 I personally wanted to use 'same size' 20" alloys for Winter tires, not 19".
19"s were PROPER choice but I wanted keep option of 20" alloys.
Using narrower Winter tire, while logical, wasn't a NEED that I felt obliged to follow. I drive some snow / ice roads in Winter but truthfully not that much mileage.

I went therefor for the same option that was provided for R8 at the time, meaning 20" Winter tires but which fit to RS4 B8 20" alloys.

I'm not suggesting that this is technically an optimum solution - the tires were still 265mm wide:) - BUT the rubber was softer for Winter and suited my needs. In retrospect the R8 20" s have worked well, and I will continue to use for B9 RS4.

My point here is just to share that there as 'an option' for drivers that (don't drive mega Winter snow, but) want Winter tire protection against colder snow & ice conditions, yet may not want 19" and thinner tire.

If you don't intend rallying around in snow & ice but just want sufficient Winter road grip in snow / ice conditions while also keeping a 20" tire, then the R8 solution seems worth considering. [... following the logic that if 20" s work on R8, then they might do ok for RS4 - they do for me]

Yep i had an identical set of 20" rotors on my B8
But wanted the original B9 19" alloy this time for my winter set

My choice is probably going to stick with the original size for the alloy 265 35 19

Yet i am tempted to go down to 255 as i had s set of 255 35 19 on my B7 and the grip in the snow was remarkable
Im just concerned about the reduced rim protection on with the 255s
So in conclusion im still undecided

But thanks for the info

20” is also available as winter tire. I run this size on mine and am happy with the performance.
I sourced a secondhand oem set.

Any one know the pressures for the 265 35 19"
Mine does nog have the 19" on the door Sticker
From scouring the internet i have came up with 42 psi front 38 psi rear
I just want to confirm this if anyone has the 265 35 19 on there door Sticker

36psi front 32 rear (that's up to half load). I will go back and heck if you need fully loaded figures.
Enjoy the better ride :)

No. The M&S listed pressures on my door are for the proper sized thin winters (235). They don’t list a 265.

To answer your original question 255 width tyre on a 9" rim is fine. That's the OEM size width tyre and rim on the B7 RS4.
