Moving on

Post by RS4John » Sun Apr 28, 2019 11:16 am

The rise in used RS4 prices this year triggered an option of moving mine on - I effect I've had the car for 6 months and got back what almost what I paid for it - an £850 loss in 6 months at this end of the market is more than acceptable.

Backwards...another RSQ3 though one of the very last RSQ3 Performance models (just 67 were registered in the UK), TBH I really missed the sheer lunacy of the 335bhp version I had and the 362bhp version is more of the same. The B9 RS4 is very marginally quicker on paper the 0-60 being 4.1 and the RSQ3 is 4.4 and 174 vs 167 mph. The 2.5TFSI is really tuneable so options exist to get comfortably into the 425bhp territory at a pretty reasonable cost. On reflection I think I expected the RS4 to be even dafter than my previous car and whilst it is on paper it is the reality is that its so fabulously competent at everything the fun component has been almost engineered out of it.

The RS4 is undoubtedly a more rapid car and there is no way an RSQ3 could keep up in a cross country sprint, more power and sophisticated suspension would see to that. The RS4 is an elegant car, a beautiful and refined design whilst the RSQ3 is a dumpy ugly bus but somehow likeable, the pace is there with a gorgeous 5 pot howl backed up by the best brakes I have ever had on a road car.

I'll miss the adaptive cruise (really learned to like that a lot) and the HUD.

Good luck!

I keep looking at alternatives to switch to, but there is nothing there even with my sensible head on, always wanted to own a Golf GTI but even a highly spec’d one is a bit dull. The R is even more bland even though quicker. A RS3 would be interesting but again long wait for a new one and not sure I want another Audi, the dealers and after care put me off.

Hate to say it but maybe I hang on and go electric in a couple of years.Pretty sure if I downgrade frustration will cost me more in the long run.

RS4 much quicker than that imho as I was getting 3.3s to 60 at Rockingham last year.

Thanks TX, Audi seem to routinely understate the power output and real performance capability of their range, almost assuming a 'worst case' scenario with poor fuel and a big headwind :audibash:

Cuttsy - yes get that, one feature that I truly detest in the latest Audi models and seems to be becoming pervasive across the range is Pre-Sense - having the RS4 apply emergency braking without much logic attached is surely going to cause an accident. I'd go as far as to say I'll avoid any vehicle that has such a system going forwards. TX - is your new ride burdened with such a feature too?

On the electric car front we are still a little way off a truly viable EV - though this article recently does inspire hope:

It does unfortunately! Had it brake for me the other day with a car parked on the left and another car coming towards me near the middle of the road :-/

I can understand, over here I also see used ones fetch prices I paid for mine when brand new.
But I’m still having too much fun with it, still keeping mine.

Picked up the RSQ3 today and bid farewell to the RS4. I'm glad to have owned one, experienced the relentless power and seemingly endless ability to corner faster than my evidently feeble imagination could cope with. I think it's the case that had I never owned the current car previously then I'd probably have been content and kept the '4 - the temptation of an exit without cost penalty and finding a low mileage (15k) vehicle with a perfect spec for me was too good a chance to pass up. There are roughly the same number of RSQ3's registered in the UK as B9 RS4s so a fairly rare car and yet also one of Audi's best kept secrets as a properly good fun driver orientated car.

£850 for 6 months in an RS4..... you can't rent a Corsa for that! Result. You make a very good point about the RSQ3 perf being Audi best kept secret, I should have looked at that more seriously when considering a two car garage, Giulia Quad for sunny days, RSQ3 for everything else.

So what will you replace it with Cuttsy? At least you have owned one...there could come a day when we are laid up in some hospital bed pondering all the things we should have done, at least owning an RS4 won't be on the list... :beerchug:

On the subject of replacements - avoid the 'buying new' trap if you can - the moment you take that car it loses the 20% VAT and most of the value of the options. The initial depreciation is absolutely brutal.

It was my second one and I will miss it, however there are some other financial commitments I have taken on, family growing up and the other car a JCW Mini is getting a little small so it looks like I will be in a Golf R for a little while and chop in the mini in a year or so's time for something a bit special again. I managed to get an amazing deal on the Golf with a stupidly low interest rate and fully loaded. So probably not the no new car and keep the options down sensible bit however it's half the outgoings and depreciation of the RS.
