Data connection problems with iPhone

Post by KiwiRS4driver » Fri Nov 30, 2018 1:32 am

Is anyone else out there struggling with this? One of the features I love on the B9 RS4 is the Google maps overlay on the sat nav. In order to run this, you need to link the MMI to a data connection on your phone. For some reason (and I suspect it is yet another iPhone issue, more than an Audi issue), the data connection keeps dropping out. For a while I was able to cure this by turning the Personal Hotspot on my phone on and off again each time I got in the car (bloody annoying but at least it worked). Now that doesn’t even seem to work. I have spent much time disconnecting and re-connecting Bluetooth, WiFi, Hotspot, and turning the phone off and on, etc etc. Occasionally I manage to get it working again, but there seems no rhyme or reason why. Audi’s instruction manual is not especially helpful. Any suggestions out there?

Otherwise I am still loving the car in every respect.

Doesn't it work on the internal sim card? On a new car there's a 3 year subscription included. (At least it is on mine)
I didn't use my iPhone as a hotspot.
I can see 2 signal meters, one lte and my phone when it's on bt.
I didn't activate the Cubic abo to use the car as a hotspot either.

Hi PieterZ - no SIM card or subscription with the new car here in NZ, so have to use hotspot on my iPhone to connect data. I have read on some Apple forums that the annoying need to reconnect each time is due to the hotspot timing out on the iPhone 5 mins after you get out of the car, but that still doesn’t explain the difficulty with reconnecting it sometimes.

iPhones do not support a rSAP (remote SIM Access Profile) as Apple for reason's only known to themselves didn't implement all of the Bluetooth protocol stack. Many Android phones such as the Samsung Galaxy range do support rSAP.

According to Audi NZ - you do have Audi Connect - with the proviso that it only supports Google based services and that's all you need.

Do you have plastic key tag that came with the keys - with a 10 digit number in it? We can probably talk you through setting it up.

If your Audi really doesn't have the internal SIM You have two options

1) You can put a data sim in the media unit in the glovebox - well in the EU cars anyway.

2) Get a suitable Android phone.
