Cooling fans go wild.

Post by PieterZ » Tue Nov 20, 2018 7:17 pm

As said in the title.
This morning I started the car and the cooling fans went to full power.
The water temp rises to normal but the oil stays at around 55°c.
This evening I drove home, same thing.
I drove 26km and the oil was still at 55°ish
Normally this goes to 90° to 100° or more if you gun it.
If you stop the engine the cooler still runs for a few minutes.
Anybody else with this issue? I presume a stuck thermostate?
Any tips? It is still warranted of course.
Anyhow if it still acts up tomorrow I will go to the dealer to have it checked.

Sounds like a stuck thermostat-open - it's been reported on another forum to be effecting S4 - a broadly similar engine with a single turbo.

Well that sucks... Did they get "unstuck" or did they need replacing?

Replaced under Warranty. I should correct my prior post however,.....
- for S4 it was plastic water pump related issue - water was not circulating - and those were replaced under warranty on each occasion, the last time w/aluminum housing pump. Fan went into 'wild' mode as you say, but also temp indicator went into red zone.
- for RS4 (B8) it was Thermostat SENSOR that had malfunctioned by telling management system falsely that engine was over heated. It was just a 'warning output signal', error which in turn drove cooling fan into boost mode. Oddly there was NO change in temp indicator when this happened.
It occurred over a couple years back and I don't recall fully if Sensor 'only' was replaced, or if as precaution or as a sub-assembly part whether more was replaced. .....am nearly certain that it was the Sensor only. No overheat / engine damage obviously in that situation. No repeat since.

A sensor could be the case too of course. Perhaps even more sensible as it kicks in after a few seconds of running.
It doesn’t overheat water is around 90 but oil is too cold at around 60.
Today didn’t work for the dealer, normally it will be for friday.
Would driving it for around 120km be an issue? I guess keeping it under 2k rpm would be wise with colder oil?
Thanks for the help!

Little update. This morning I drove 120km to the dealer in Leverkusen.
Problem remained the same at startup.
After a few km the yellow check engine light lit.
Engine responded normal except it stayed cold.
I believe the water temp rose one notch higer than usually, 1 above 90deg.
(Not sure any more can someone confirm it stays on the 90 mark when driving normal?)
After the drive I opened the bonnet, the engine still felt cold.

Just a thought. Don't forget the cars come with Audi Assistance. You could let them take the car to the dealer on the back of a truck.

Correct. But only to the nearest and those suck in my region.
I am also third party insured for roadside assistance but then you get a crappy rental.
Driving gave no issues so I didn’t think of it to be honest.

I received an update today, the thermostat is faulty and needs replacing.
Once they receive it it will be mounted.
Hopefully that cures it.

I picked it up today, all is well now.
They had to take the front bumper and some more stuff of to reach it.
I asked for an oil change too when I brought it in, even that was free of charge!
Big thumbs up to Audi Zentrum Leverkusen.

I'm having the same issue now. Cooling fans go wild on start and the engine light goes on. It also reports a start/stop issue.

Looks like a stuck one too.
I just had the fans blazing, I didn’t have any other issues or warning lights, except when I was on the way to the dealer.
Check engine light came on but it did say I could drive on.
Temp was low so I drove moderately on.
It was a quick fix, and I never had the issue again so far.

Got my issue fixed in 2 days, they had to replace the pump of the watercooler.
