OBD11 - re-programming the RS?

Post by RS4John » Mon Oct 15, 2018 10:25 pm

Had a look but couldn't see any posts - has anyone ever had a play with an OBD Eleven device - used for re-programming some of the electronic systems in VAG vehicles?

https://obdeleven.com/en/ Do note that you will need a Bluetooth capable Android device, unless things have changed there is no iOS support.

I bought one last year (then around £50) and used it to code the door mirrors to fold on locking the car (the Q3 doesn't have an MMI option for this). Now I have a VIN for the RS4 it would seem there are many tweaks one could do... i.e. increase the range of the remote key fob, have lane departure in the HUD, altering the temp of each of the settings of the heated seats and many others - there is even one for turning on the developer screens in the virtual cockpit with a dire warning that it's possible to brick the display - I won't tinker with that then....

I got one to program stop start to be permanently off in my RS5.
I have not been able to do this and have not found anyone who has in the latest RS4 (B9) or RS5 (F5).

I would love to know how successful you are.

I'll take a look - its in the list of options as doable. I'll pick the new toy up on Sat 27th. On another forum (Q3 forum) one of the members managed to disable stop/start with a gizmo that went behind the dash switch on his RSQ3.

What did you manage to program (that was worth doing) in the end, John?

The headlamp washers cover the front of the car with foamy crap - most times the headlamps aren't dirty. My previous 2016 RSQ3 had fabulous LED headlights and no headlamp washers (probably an oversight by Audi - as normal Q3's with LED lights did get the washers). The headlamps run cool so the weather gunge doesn't get baked on the lenses - washers just aren't needed.

When Xenon headlamps were the norm they had to have washers (along with fail-safe electronics to save safety workers from being zapped by high voltages in and self levelling), introduced in the UK 2002 Construction and Use regulations - I don't think LEDs have the same requirements.

I use demineralized water with a bit of window wash in it.
That almost leaves no marks on the car compared to tapwater.
Cost is minimal.

Thanks PieterZ, will give that a shot for the windscreen wash.

1st OBD11 mod completed - the OBD11 device says the washers are off. The weather forecast here in the midlands is best described as 'grotty' for tomorrow so I'll see if it has worked. The next item for testing is the Soundaktor, I'm tempted to set it to 'Off' and see if it's missed.

So you've had the car for a few weeks now. Do you find the ODB11 working well with the B9?

Have you tried any coding on the stop/start function?

Yes, soon be two months on the 23rd. The OBD11 works well - so far I've only done the headlamp washers.

TBH I don't find the Stop/Start especially annoying so haven't felt the need to change it. It's 100 credits in the App and I have 376 spare so if you are relatively close to the Midlands by any chance the I'm happy to set your car up in the App and apply the change. Perhaps PM me with your VIN and I can make sure it's an available option for the RS5?

Next OBD11 mod - turn off the synthetic engine noise SoundAktor. An electro-mechanical device located on the inner face (so inside the car) on the front bulkhead that's supposed to generate synthetic engine noise as the vehicles are so well insulated we can no longer hear much of what's going on under the bonnet apparently.

So the usual OBD11 routine - plug the adaptor in, connect using Bluetooth on the phone, select the option from the App list and hold the green tick symbol until the coding is complete - about 1 minute start to finish.

So is it any different? Same start up bark from the exhaust (mine has the Sports exhaust option - do they all do that?), normal driving through town seems almost the same, except there is only natural sound from the engine bay, the way a V6 ought to sound - the synthetic 'gurgling' noise has gone. I'll leave it as it is 'Off', for those that like the effect then it's selectable from Off to 100% in 10% increments.
