wear on ceramic discs?

Post by PieterZ » Wed Aug 08, 2018 2:12 pm

Out of curiosity I measured my front discs.
They now are 38,03 mm on 7300km. Normal road use, only once braked heavily on the Autobahn.
I don't know what thickness they are new.
So far there is no visible wear except that the part that rubs the pads is shiny.
The marked min. replacement thickness is only 37,86 mm.
Is wear so minimum on these? They are supposed to last a longer time compared to steel discs.
It's only about 2/10 mm of consumable thickness!
Anybody who has had them on previous cars that can chime in on this ?

I had them on my B8, but didn't spec them on my B9.
My car did 54k ish miles from memory, and the wear indication was barely measurable from new, and I did a couple of trackdays in mine and a day at Vmax, which is super heavy on brakes
I didn't measure the thickness, but when the dealer serviced it, I had them check it and they basically said they were pretty much as thick as new.
They're supposed to last >100k miles, but you just have to be mega careful you don't get a stone or something similar stuck in the caliper as if you score a ring on them, they're scrap, and you're then looking at a £6400/pr bill for replacements
Nice addition to the car though, and on the B8, they really transform the handling as the car tracks bumps and less than perfect surfaces so much better than my first B8 which had standard discs

I'm planning to do more than 100k miles with my car. Thus I will need new discs sooner or later.
So just aheads up. A seller in Germany has 5 sets on ebay, at a really good price (haggeled to €3200 shipped)
The are advertised as new discs. And they seem to be regarding the pics
I decided to order a spare set at these prices. I checked at the dealer and was quoted around 10k € with pads... Plus fitting.
