Is the RS5 the same as RS4 without the boot?

Post by RS Owner » Fri Feb 23, 2018 3:52 pm

I have been through this forum and I think currently it's
  • RS4 orders - 5 people
  • RS5 orders - 0 people
Is the RS4 outselling the RS5 purely because you all need the extra doors/seats/luggage or is there something else?

I'm chewing over the 4, I've now got four doors but need a load lugger. The 5 is no use to me.

Alot o people will see the Avant as the true RS
as the original was the RS2 Avant
Im In this camp as the avant looks better
IMO and theres just something about audi avants for me they have always looked better than there saloon equivalent
The Audi Quattro turbo would be thd exception to the rule for me
But it confuses me that the coup costs more than the avant

They're fundamentally the same, and in the case of the B8, they both drove pretty much the same too
However, I've test driven both the new Rs5 and the new RS4, and the RS4 is that little bit better at everything. it's hard to pinpoint exact differences as on paper they're pretty much the same, but the RS5 just didn't feel great to me, whereas the Rs4 feels like a much more balanced car
I drove the new Rs5 in view to ordering a new Rs4, and I was a bit disappointed to be honest, but after having a new Rs4 for a couple of days, I was smitten with it

How do the differences manifest themselves? Do you have to push the cars in a corner to notice the difference?

It almost feels like they'd tried to make the Rs5 more aggressive, but in doing so, made it not work as well.
RS4/5's have always had decent initial turn-in, but then understeered badly once you'd set the car into the corner. In the Rs5 this continues, whereas the Rs4 is more neutrally balanced, and you can get the back out if you're heavy with the accelerator
Also, the steering felt more numb in the Rs5
RS5 sounded better though, but that might have been that the demo car I tried had a couple of k on it, whereas the RS4 was pretty much brand new

IMHO RS4 B7 Saloon, I think the shape is sublimely beautiful. The original RS4 was Avant but I feel that it's only nostalgia to say the Avant looks the best. No offence to anyone here, this is just my opinion.

If you need luggage space then an RS4 Avant is a no brainer.

From the reviews I've watched and read the RS4 seems to be a better car. I know this isn't the be all and end all but I'm guessing this put a lot of people off the RS5.

Possibly so, but remember the Rs5 was out (and under performing sales wise) long before the Rs4 reviews started
I think the market for a sports coupe has moved on, and the pricing of the Rs5 has put a lot of people off it

I have been waiting for the RS4 because I was hoping for 500hp  I dont think 450hp sets me on fire. Same as B8 from way back.
Alfa Quad has 500, Merc C63 has 500, BMW M3/4 special editions currently have 500 and the new model is expected to have 500.
RS cars have usually led the field in hp terms.

I dont give a lot of credibility to many of the recent reviews by "moto vloggers" but Henry (Catchpole) did say that he thought the RS4 was better then RS5. He speculated that the longer wheelbase made it "more engaging". That could mean anything though.
It's still putting me off the 5 a little though.
I don't trust my own ability to determine the difference with a test drive. Need a CH review, wonder if they review it on new top gear, starts this Sunday.

Conversely, I don’t rate ch reviews at all on anything other than supercars as he wants is something that drifts and sounds mental, whereas most RS4 drivers want an everyday car
Don’t get me wrong, I like the bloke, but he’s too tied up in thrashing tyres to have any weight in my everyday car buying decisions

I cant say any review has swayed my decision to by a car
The B5 was slated buy the jurnos for the handling and that the alloys were made out of sponge
Never even registered when i bought mine new

If you took on board all the reviews you would still be riding a bike

The B9 Avant will have better weight distribution over the coupé. It's been a 'thing' since the C5... It won't be a vast difference but it's there and it'll count most mid-corner.
No matter where you go, there you are.

But the new car feels way faster than the B8 - you should try it to experience the difference in torque. It is plenty quick enough for me and I currently drive a RS6. And it puts the power done so well in real world conditions - the Merc and BMW wouldn’t see which way it went on most British roads.
