Independent in Cambridge area

Post by Brooner » Fri Aug 14, 2020 9:26 am

can anyone recommend a garage near Cambridge as a friend's son is having issues with his brakes after only 3k on them and Audi Cambridge seem to be playing silly buggers
Telling him he has buckled 2 alloys needs disks and pads all round and 4 new tyres and looking to charge him 4k plus
the car is not a RS its A4 Avant 3ltr tdi
I've found alloys on ebay for about 250 each and tyres for about 160 each
So just tying to point him the right direction of a decent indi garage

Worth a chat with Marcus as what he dosnt know about brakes isn't worth knowing.

Very nice guy and worth a call, based in Soham.

The forced road balancing is where they balanced the wheels while running it on a dummy road instead of fresh air. If you had a supercar driving at over 100 mph all the time it might be worth it. I'm surprised they didn't try and sell him Nitrogen fill instead of air to fill the tires with too.

You say it has had these problems after 3k miles, is that from new or since he bought it? If he bought it with cracked alloys and disc's/pads on the wear limit then Audi would be right. Maybe the previous owner sold it as he didn't have £4k either! Was the car a private purchase or from a car dealer? If it was from a car dealer I'd ask for them to deal with it, if they refuse trading standards would be good place to start.

I had a piston start binding on my A4 front caliper suddenly for no reason. I bought a rebuild kit from Big red, no affiliation, it worked a dream. Don't forget to replace the caliper carrier bolts don't reuse the originals as they are torqued to their into elastic range if you change the discs. I did front and back discs and pads myself no problem.

I hope this helps

Regards

Jools

Cheers Jools
Hes had the car since new
He can't place a moment when went into a pothole to bend the alloys
This is the 2nd set of disks as he was getting vibration on the last set after 5k so they were replaced by audi with no charge
And the issue re apaired after 3k now they are telling him as above
all new tyres 2 new alloys and disks and pad all round as the pads are at minimum where
I did explain the vibration was pad build up from stop start city driving and can be sorted buy stamping on the brakes several times to clear that but im puzzled the pads are done
I advised him to search else where for the tyres and alloys possibly look at them getting straightened if thats feasible
But to push audi on the disks as 3k is unacceptable

Have you considered taking it to another Audi main dealer for a 2nd opinion? (Not in same group) as that may hold more weight than an indy when taking them on.

Actually Hunter Road Force balancers are superb. I use nothing else these days. If you want that new car smooth as silk ride there is no substitute. They will spot buckles and hard spots in tyres and, if all good, match tyre to rim (by rotating tyre) to get smoothest ride. Most factories use this system these days - at least on big tyre / low profile / big wheel set ups. You can find your nearest one here www.balancemycar.co.uk

PS and no, I don’t use nitrogen fills :)
