B9 RS4 ?

Audi use an auto box instead of DCT due to torque limits. The old RS4 was normally aspirated, as is the new R8 V10 plus. NA cars generally have less torque than forced induction cars. Look at the V10plus and the RS6 C7, both have around the same power at a shade over 600ps but the torque of the R8 is 560nm compared to the RS6 with 750 (PE on over boost otherwise 700nm). So it looks like the DCT can handle the torque from the NA engines of the B8 and R8 but with the B9 pretty much guaranteed to be a turbod V6 it might have to go with the higher torque limit of the ZF box.

I got my info from the internet (not Audi themselves) but as the S4 is slush box (only) then I am tending to believe the RS4 will be the same. I just can't understand why, internet speculation says it is the torque of the new turbo engine but as the R8 V10 plus is DCT (s-tronic) then it must be ok to put RS4 level of torque through a DCT box.

If you want DCT then it has got to be the M3 (I'm not turned on by BMW image) but neither do I want a slush box so it will affect my buying decision.

yes i was addressing Audi hopefully they read these things but its a long shot

anyone now why they wont go for a manual box less issues and they can handle the torque

Yes, not disputing it is not possible, just saying I don't think audi currently have a DCT box that can handle the potential torque from the next gen forced induction RS4. But yes, they could buy one from another company, it's not like they make the ZF8 either.

S-Tronic/DSG is in the new R8, so there is.

ZF8 is ok, but it's light years behind a good DCT box. I found the C7 RS6 gear change appalling compared with my B8 RS4.

I find the gear changes on ZF8 perfectly fine. Id be surprised if I could notice any difference in shift speeds as it seems quick enough already. The RS3 gearbox seems unnoticably quicker to me. Are we talking milliseconds of difference here?

New B9 S4 was just launched with 8-speed, the explanation given was the too high torque the V6 turbo produces. The same engine in higher tune expected (I think actually confirmed) to be in B9 RS4, so dual clutch not an option, I think we can put this discussion to bed now... What I heard, and this is what makes it really interesting, is that B9 RS4/5 would have the same electric "turbo" technology as SQ7... Would make it the first production petrol engine with the technology, and considering it technically eliminates any turbo lag, maybe I will need to reconsider my position of "never turbo"...

I'd disagree, B8 is quicker and the Porsche stuff is quicker still. Go plant your boot in a GT3 or Turbo. VAG has the tech and presumably because of cost it doesn't make the grade.

There are ways of having PDK/S-tronic/DSG/blabla hold big torque but the cost has to fit the badge. Veyron runs a DCT, it costs £100,000 but it's a VAG dual clutcher (albeit a wet one - fnaaaar).

I was at Goodwood Festival of Speed on Sunday and asked the people on the Audi stand when the new RS4 was out. They all said the same thing that they are not allowed to speak about new products. But the stand was full of new products like the new A5 and to me it looks awful. So it looks like we'll have to wait.
