RS246 Crew
The RS246 Crew is no longer. We will be reviewing if this is necessary and how to best implement.
Thanks to all the Crew members of past.

PhilT, JR, Simon (Simple1), and the rest of you guys.
I realise things must move on, so good luck with your new projects.
Thanks for doing such a cracking job over the years. I know that without this forum I would not have such a great laugh over the years of RS ownership.
I hope you have identified some reliable moderators to fill the void of the crew.
Personally I would suggest a crew should still exist, (maybe in a different form if necessary) to that you currently have.
Otherwise this place will likely degenerate and lose its excellent reputation.
Why not still keep a crew, but you original guys maintain a hands off sleeping moderator approach ?
Be very proud of what you've achieved, but be sure to leave it in good / capable hands too
All the best guys,
John.

Too many toys, not enough time
Phil,
An explanation is required please
There have been many, many changes at Crew level over the last few months, and this latest move seems to be very irregular.
Even if there is to be no moderation, I believe that there needs to be some clarification of what is going on if you are to retain the support of both the members and sponsors of the site.

I'll keep it short and sweet:
- The Crew was only such by name and had, over time, become disfunctional.
- John and I will moderate where required, and let's be honest, you can all be examples of moderation in its best form.
- It was the users who first questioned the Crew. Call this a "clean sheet".
So instead of pointing fingers and asking questions of the past, why not help define what the Crew should do, if the site needs a Crew, how often or how the Crew members are selected, who would fit the role, etc.
If you want to change something, then don't look at the past.

Right then Phil, you asked for it
First off, lets be clear what you are looking for.
The crew used to be involved in running (or at least attending) area gatherings.
If this is no longer the case all you really need is forum moderators, independent from area organisers.
I would like to propose that yourself and John become 'super moderators' (Crew Captains?), but have a set of daily moderators responsible for each area of the forum.
These may be selected by a number of means, but usually the best are those active in those forum areas.
You need people that are ideally current owners, but also indicate they will likely continue ownership for the near future.
From these it would be handy if they were also area organisers, for the same reasons as above, but also because they will become known to those that attend the meetings.
There is a lot to be said for someone you can relate to because you've met them.
Given that you already have area organisers, I would suggest you consider these first to be your moderators / crew.
So there you have it, in my opinion.
You two guys can be top of the pile, but you cannot run the whole show on your own.
Therefore you need a support team around you, what you call it is arbitrary, but personally I think 'Crew' is just as good a name as anything.
If necessary add an explanation page to the menu saying something like 'The Crew - who are we and what do we do...'
Now I've tought you all how to suck eggs I'll go back to sleep

But surely you need to look at the past as a means of building the future? Learn by mistakes made in the past and also retain elements from the past that proved popular or succesful. If you want to change something, then don't look at the past

I've outlined mine above John.
If yourself and Phil are to remain head honchos so be it, but please don't try to run the whole show on your own, you will just get jaded.
Put a collection of helpers in place.
If rs246 is to be more than merely a web site, and include area meets etc then you definitely cannot do it on your owns.
Can I suggest you consider forming a committee, set up a constitution, etc.
This sets the ground rules, shows who is in charge, who has the decision making powers, etc.
Make the whole thing more club like, even if there is no joining fee.
I have no idea what the real issues were, but the above gives a level of accountability.
I have other ideas that I'm happy to share, but won't post them up here. If you want to hear them send me a pm and I'll outline them.
You guys have been on several other forums, so you probably know most of it anyway.
Looking forward to getting back to normal very soon
Cheers,
John.

I don't know if my point of view will be a popular one, but I think the fewer people you have to run something, the more efficiently it works. You just have less people to disagree with. And if having a small number of crew members means that the site goes in a direction that the users aren't happy with, they already have a great forum to discuss their issues with it.
