Confused of Cranleigh

at the top of the page I see 'You have no new messages',
but down the side I was seeing 'you have (1|1) private message' (its says (1|0) now I've read it).
This private message doesn't seem to be in my inbox, yet if I click on it on the left I see a different lnbox with only 1 message in it.
What's the story here then ?
Do we all have two different sets of message in/outboxes ?
The consequence of this is that I didn't respond to a message sent to me by Mk4Ash from way back in November, and its only now that curiosity got the better of me that I noticed it...
