Pop-ups...

Post by Carps » Wed Nov 19, 2003 11:09 pm

Is this site responsible for the onslaught of pop-up that I have been experiencing in the last few months ?

I've had no increase in pop-ups from being on this site.

I joined the site two months ago and get no unexpected pop-ups. Do you have a firewall and spy software?

Just thought I'd check and have now seen that you're a computer programmer.

I don't have any prob from rs246.com but try "SpyBot Search and Destroy", it's a freebie which will do wonders.

Note : you'll be SHOCKED by the number of spywares you have on your system the first time you run it.

I just ditched 86 potential problems.

I have also just discovered that a program called wcmdmgr is nothing to do with Windows as I had assumed, but actually appears to gather info from your PC and deliver it to the vendor . It is sourced from Wild Tangent, who seem to have something to do with games, but give you this to. I just cleaned my system of all Wild Tangent stuff.

It's still a little strange that such a lot of traffic seems to be coming from rs246.com (no pun intended), as a quick check of my firewall activity hasn't shown anything at all from here.

As well as Spybot I also run Lavasoft Ad-aware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
This also catches some stuff that Spybot can't

The version of Spybot you are running has 5835 recorded problems it specifically looks for. When you get to no. 2957 your version is either trying to resolve an issue with that specific known problem, in which case leave it for a while to try and delete it, or you may need to reload the latest version.

Another source of popups are file sharing programs such as Kazaa. Though as mentioned earlier its always good to run Spybot once a week to keep your machine clean.

PS if anyone is running Kazaa i recommend doenloading Kazaa Lite as it doesnt download any spyware or adverts onto your PC and it also lifts download/upload limits imposed by Kazaa.
