Looks like the dating sites and cheap shoe spammers have had their time, nice one Phil.

WTF is going on again? Must be reporting about 10 spam posts per day.

At the moment I'm considering making the ability to post and PM a subscription. My thinking is that it'll get rid of the trash. I'm stuck for other ideas to get rid of the spam accounts.

Gotta do what ya gotta do MrT. Doesn't have to be mega money does it, plus it may help cover the revenue from the adverts and they can go as well!

That would be the plan. Just need to figure out an automated way to do it.

What about a reputation type system? No PMs until 10 legit posts, etc.

I personally think a paid subscription would cause an exodus. Plus you could argue that the members are generating content that you are monetising currently. Which is fine and normal. "If it's free then *you* are the product" and all that.

Good points but PMs are less of an issue, it's the "legit posts" and many of them are far from legit and require a huge amount of cleanup and administration.

Paid membership solves a couple of problems, 1) we need money to run 2) I'm going to assume that spammers will not pay. I need to think about it more and see what options we have. I've been involved in or running this site for almost 20 years and there's a fairly large "Directors Loan" that has grown over time. I try to run the site as efficiently as possible but the bills don't seem to get smaller. I'm thinking a nominal membership fee would sort the wheat from the chaff.

Can't see any other way apart from membership fee that will stop the spammers.
Don't know how many folk post on here per week, I'm sure a small fee wouldn't stop most.

Just to add, I think the only problem with charging is the folk who don't have a sense of humour and complain about certain styles of posters. When they pay even £1, they throw the toys out the pram saying "I don't pay to have to read this".
