Help with pics

Hi - I'm having trouble uploading pics, according to my Mac the files are way under 1024kb, yet they still don't seem to want to load... Managed it eventually, I think I reduced it down to 400kb, now it seems to have uploaded the same pic twice, and when I try to delete either of them I'm getting error message:

"Directory 'modules/coppermine/albums/' is not writable, pictures can't be deleted"
