My B7 RS4 Paint Job So Far

Post by lushman » Sat Sep 03, 2022 1:59 pm

Hi

Just thought I would share some pics of my car going through stages of prep for a full respray in the same colour.
Long story short I had some laquer peel on the front and arranged with a body Shop that I used for work vans repair to have the front resprayed (Dec 2020)
1 month in as they were busy the had just ordered a new oven which they needed but to say it turned out to be a right fiasco was an understatement. They had started the prep work on the front of the car but roll on 18 months the oven is finally up and running.
Work has started proper on the car and should have back Monday week.
I have attached some pics and had the windscreen removed the other day as I decided I wanted a fresh one.
Other work is going to be oil cooler and pipes, new MAF, new expansion tank and a comprehensive detail especially on the inside.
If anyone know where I can get the badges for the trim on the rear doors ideally in black that would be a big help.
They had to reprime the roof as there were a few imperfections which has delayed the job by another day. I honestly did not realise how much work went into preping a car for paint. All the doors bonnet and tailgate have been brought right down to bare metal.

Now that does look like a lot of work.

Look forward to the progress.

The car made it into the booth today and just waiting on an update. The panels will be done over the next few days.
Meanwhile, the car will be on the ramp getting the mechanicals completed and calipers removed along with a new windscreen.
CAnt wait to get the car back!

Some amount of work in that. Did they have the headlining removed to get the roof rails off? It’ll look class when it’s all back together. Where did you go for the new windscreen?

Roof lining was partially removed for the rails. Windscreen came from a guy via Moto Glass. £190 fitted which I thought was pretty good. He had previously done a screen in my van and I discussed with him options as the laminate was starting to come apart in a top corner of the car and he explained he would do it for me taking great care when replacing it. He definitely did and I am very happy so far (Except for the delay)
Car goes on the ramp tomorrow for calipers off and painted, oil cooler and pipes, new expansion bottle and full service. Meanwhile, the doors bonnet and tailgate should be painted and then fitted once all the other work is completed. New door rubbers on the front and also the rubber strip at top of door bottom of window. £85 for 1 strip via TPS ouch!

Car is looking great! You will be glad to get it back on the road again after your saga!!!

Yes, it's a massive amount of work involved when undergoing a full respray.

Did they manage to remove the kick-plates without damaging them?

Just a wee update. Still no car back

When the garage got around to changing the oil cooler and pipes they discovered the power steering radiator, air con radiator and coolant radiator were all knackered and needed to be replaced (Thats another story too long for here regarding the delay).
The hunt began and never realised these parts were so expensive.
I used a combination of TPS, LLL parts and all car parts fast. Prices really do vary for the same OEM part!
These have now been fitted just before Chrimbo.
The door blade on drivers door is pretty poor (We held off for as long as I could to get a replacement) and I have searched everywhere for one but apart from buying a door there is not much out there. I have given it to a fabricator to see if they can do anything with it and take it from there.
I hope to get the car back completed and detailed before Friday 13th Jan!
Meanwhile I have attached pics of another project that I having done. My other halfs 2000 Mini Cooper sport. Had to go to York to get a complete shell from MIni Heritage which cost the same as the car did new. Only 17k on the clock and this will be finished Spring/Summer. I am in no hurry for this as it wont be used on the road so I have to find somewhere to either store it or sell (if I am allowed)
I will hopefully get my car back within a fortnight and share the long awaited finished article, but after looking at Martins misano red I have a long way to go lol

I feel your pain about not having the car for so long but it will all be worth it in the end.

My power steering radiator/pipes were flagged up during an MRC inspection so I will needed to add that to the list of stuff that needs doing when the front end gets done.

Which power steering radiator did you use in the end?

Door blades on ebay which may or may not be the correct items:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255305027666 ... media=COPY

UPDATE: These door blades are for a base model A4 B7 which are flat but not quite the same size as the base model A4 B6 ones (same part number minus the E) which are identical to the RS4 B7 ones. Might be better than no door blades though...

Love the Mini, my mates Dad had one of the final run out editions (also in red) but it only ever sat in the garage which was a bit of a waste!

Looking forward to seeing pictures of your RS4 when finished, it's all about keeping these brilliant old cars on the road!

Power steering radiator (OEM) was from TPS and cost £285. The pipes for it were fine.
I saw the post about the door blades and my reading is he has just the one left and charging 350 euro which is taking the pi@@
Hopefully I will be happy with the work done to the door blade but if needs be I may just have to bite the bullet
I can't wait to see my car back as I have been driving a 1.5 Renault Kangoo since lol
I will dig out the part for the rad if needed
Cheers

I take it it is this radiator you are talking about?
Yes the engine bay is full of dust!

That is a good price, I think my pipes might need replacing as well, given the sump needs replacing and the rest of the state of the underside this would not be a surprise!

350 for one blade that is not quite the right size is a bit steep! I fixed one of my blades about 7 years ago and it has been fine ever since so fingers crossed.

Haha! I have been driving the Mrs's Fiat 500 1.2 (69bhp) for the last 2 and a half years whilst the Audi has been worked on. It's definitely not fast but it is good fun to drive 🙂

Thanks for the picture, aye, that is the radiator.
