So with the sills and the jacking points fixed (the jack blocks are now sealed to stop them filling up with water again) it was time to get it up onto the ramp to see what else was lurking underneath. Turns out....... more rust! And lots of it

The plan is to refurbish the existing parts where possible and replace if not.

This is what happens when you use the car all year round in the UK without a garage. With hindsight, under-sealing the car when I got it back in 2011 would have been a good idea. Having said that, I don't regret using it.

Yes, it’s been a while; don’t think I’ve been on here since I sold my RS4, 7 years or so! I’ve still got the GT3RS and also bought another nice wee toy😁
Got the notion for another B7 RS4 though and I’d actually put a deposit down on one recently but the guy had a very unfortunate accident with it just before I was due to pick it up 😟 it was a cracker too.
Love a look at your car sometime.

Wow that rust is pretty bad. I feel for you mate, but at least when it's done it will be sorted properly.

7 years?!!! Has it really been that long? I saw your old Avant up for sale last year, don't think it had done many miles since you sold it!

The guy working on my car had a 2002 in for paint last time I was there, lovely wee things.

I think good B7 RS4's are getting harder to find now they are getting on a bit. Shame the one you had lined up had an accident. What shape you looking for this time?

Yes, we can catch up when I finally get the car back and you can have a poke around it. I have only driven it once myself in the last 18 months!!!

Yes, it's the worst RS4 B7 he has done so far! Pretty much caught just in time, another year or two and it would have been off to the big scrapyard in the sky!

The problem with these jobs is knowing when to stop......

With most of the parts removed from the underside, everything was stripped back to the bare metal, de-corroded and then acid treated, before being sealed.

I hate to think how many hours this took but at least it has been done properly! They mentioned that there were a few bits of minor welding to be done on the rear but overall it was mostly just surface rust.

Ideally I’d like a sprint blue saloon but if a particularly nice Avant came up I could easily be swayed. Im in no hurry and happy to wait for the right car. Seeing the corrosion on the underside of your car is a good reminder of the age of these cars now and makes me very aware of what I could be getting in to….
I did see my car up for sale but i wouldn’t feel right about having it back again after 5 recent owners and 20k miles put on it.
The little 02 is a special wee thing; I’ll bring it along if the weathers still decent when we meet up , gives a shout when you get back.

Good to hear you might be returning to RS4 B7 ownership! For sure any purchase would need to go up on a ramp to see what is under the plastic covers. My one had an almost clean MOT before it went to the underside restorer.....

I am guessing your old white one would still have been quite low mileage even with an extra 20k on it? I know what you mean though, not sure how I would feel about having an old car back again, especially with 5 extra owners.

Aye, be good to meet up again, the BMW is a cool wee thing! Be next year now though as my car is still on a lift.

With all the corrosion removed, the bare underside was then treated with mastic epoxy followed by body colour and then finished with clear coat.

Hopefully this should keep any rust at bay for a few years.

That's a horrendous level of corrosion for a car in the "modern" age. Mine would probably have been heading in that direction pre treatment, what I got done has probably only slowed it down somewhat.. cars looking really good man, dread to think what you've clocked up on the tab, I'd need to be paying as I went to avoid a huge bill at the end..

Great pics, keep them coming

The work done on this is sublime. This was at Liberty Autoworks right?. I think we spoke on the FB forum not long ago.

Look forward to the thread updates :)
